{"id":5455,"date":"2016-02-03T11:47:54","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T15:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=5455"},"modified":"2016-02-03T11:47:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T15:47:54","slug":"skateboards-quad-copters-and-t-shirts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/02\/03\/skateboards-quad-copters-and-t-shirts\/","title":{"rendered":"Skateboards, quad copters, and t-shirts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second week of the semester has finished.\u00a0 Engineering students in the Dynamics class (for model rockets and more) do not yet have assignments that involve the 3D Lab.\u00a0 But the room is a flurry of activity with students working on their own projects.\u00a0 There is rarely a dull moment.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, last semester one of our students started designing a custom guitar using Solidworks, a computer aided design (CAD) program.\u00a0 It will be fabricated using the laser cutter and 3D printers.\u00a0 It\u2019s quite an original design, too.\u00a0 That project is still underway, but he has a new project; a two-wheeled skateboard!\u00a0 Using the drill press, he fabricated metal mounts for the small wheels, then mounted them on either end of the skateboard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_193414.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5459\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_193414-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700102_193414\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_193423.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5463\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_193423-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700102_193423\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_134845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5471\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_135855-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700113_135855\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_134845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5467\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_134845-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700113_134845\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the first build, he realized that the wheels are too close to the board, making it difficult to angle it while riding.\u00a0 His next idea involves fabricating custom wheel mounts using the resin 3D printer (generously provided by the Romich Foundation). This printer supports \u201ccastable resin\u201d that will form the mounts (that will be cast from metal).\u00a0 Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The R\/C Flight Club is really taking off this semester (pun intended).\u00a0 Quad-copters are all the rage; students are flying palm size machines, larger quad-copters, and a really large tri-copter.\u00a0 Some of these were built from kits.\u00a0 The club\u2019s goal is assembling enough copters to race them later this semester.\u00a0 Chris, the club\u2019s president, mounted a camera on his copter, then taped a video screen onto a blacked out helmet.\u00a0 The result is a virtual reality-like experience when flying the copter.\u00a0 Quite inventive!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_211930.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5475\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700102_211930-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700102_211930\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_093628.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5479\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700113_093628-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700113_093628\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One doesn\u2019t need to be an engineer nor CAD designer to make wonderful things in the 3D Lab.\u00a0 Jackie, one of our staff, used the vinyl cutter and heat press to create a personalized t-shirt for a retiree.\u00a0 These machines are provided by the Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club where its young patrons visit the college to use the technology, too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most interesting is Paul\u2019s project, a faculty member who is creating t-shirts to promote an upcoming travel experience to Morocco.\u00a0 His design uses three vinyl colors that are individually cut and arranged.\u00a0 It\u2019s quite a challenge, but quite beautiful!\u00a0 We are thankful for OABGC for providing this equipment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700103_183610.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5483\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700103_183610-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700103_183610\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700106_153144.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5495\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_20151119_133432-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151119_133432\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700106_153144.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5491\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700108_201710-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700108_201710\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700106_153144.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5487\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/02\/IMG_19700106_153144-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700106_153144\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, Nathan laser engraved this beautiful wooden disc (material generously furnished P.
