{"id":6047,"date":"2016-05-16T15:03:48","date_gmt":"2016-05-16T19:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=6047"},"modified":"2016-05-16T15:03:48","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T19:03:48","slug":"rubber-extruding-race-car-decals-and-a-jamming-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/05\/16\/rubber-extruding-race-car-decals-and-a-jamming-session\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubber extruding, race car decals, and a jamming session"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Summer break is finally here.\u00a0 With students rushing about the halls and studying hurriedly last week, it seems like a quieter, different world this week.\u00a0 Students and community members still come to the Wayne College 3D Lab to finish-up personal projects, though.<\/p>\n<p>One exciting announcement is that we now support printing with rubber!\u00a0 3D printers typically build objects out of plastic, so this is major news.\u00a0 Our Taz 5 printers (generously provided by the Wayne County Community Foundation) supports this upgrade.\u00a0 Our students are really excited about this; now they can print plastic parts with rubber bumpers, wheels with rubber treads, gaskets, and so much more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6051\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_19700108_212034-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700108_212034\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nathan, our resident 3D Lab staff and 3D printing expert, upgraded the Taz printer, replacing the plastic extruder with a two-extruder assembly that supports plastic and rubber extrusion during the same print job.\u00a0 It is so nice to have student engineers around; they know almost everything and dig right into complicated projects.\u00a0 Or perhaps I am simply lazy. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6055\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_19700108_230822-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700108_230822\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rubber extruder uses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ninjaflex3d.com\/\">NinjaFlex<\/a> material.\u00a0 This is incredible flexible and strong rubber; it\u2019s almost impossible to tear it apart nor separate layers that have been printed.\u00a0 There are also different densities available, from very flexible rubber to \u201cwheel chock\u201d semi-rigid material.<\/p>\n<p>One object that we recently printed is a rubber sleeve to fix a paper \u201cstamp\u201d used by crafters.\u00a0 The stamp\u2019s plastic casing was cracking apart, so the non-slip rubber sleeve protects it from damage and makes the stamper usable again:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6059\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160516_124806-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160516_124806\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6063\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160516_124827-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160516_124827\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan from the UA Human Powered Vehicle Team visited the 3D Lab last week to create car decals for an race in Athens, Ohio that happened this past weekend.\u00a0 He was already familiar with the Roland vinyl cutter (provided by the Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club), as this brand is used in professional shops all over he world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6067\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160512_071440-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160512_071440\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6071\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_5279-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5279\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the car\u2019s beautiful decals, it won first place!\u00a0 Seriously, though, the team\u2019s vehicle won 1st place Overall, 1st place in Innovation, 1st place in Endurance, 1st place at Women&#8217;s drag racing, 2nd place at Men&#8217;s drag racing, and 5th place in Design.\u00a0 Congratulations!\u00a0 You can follow the team on Facebook at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AkronU.HPV\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AkronU.HPV<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6075\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_5372-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5372\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty, and staff are having a wonderful time learning the laser engraver lately due to beautiful water bottles provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgrahamdunn.com\/\">P.
