{"id":6115,"date":"2016-05-24T16:04:12","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T20:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=6115"},"modified":"2016-05-24T16:04:50","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T20:04:50","slug":"maker-monday-big-cnc-machine-improvements-and-a-trip-to-wooster-township-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/05\/24\/maker-monday-big-cnc-machine-improvements-and-a-trip-to-wooster-township-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Maker Monday, big CNC machine improvements, and a trip to Wooster Township School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>The first week of summer has certainly started with a bang at the Wayne College 3D Lab.\u00a0 What I thought would be a mostly empty lab with students on summer break turned out to be a bustle of activity!\u00a0 Yesterday, representatives from the Orrville Boys and Girls Club laser engraved dozens of water bottles to promote their organization, a new community member visited the lab to 3D print items from rubber and resin, and today there are folks using the laser engraver and working on radio controlled airplanes.\u00a0 The lab truly is a place where people come to collaborate and create.\u00a0 Many thanks to P. Graham Dunn, The Romich Foundation, the Wayne County Community Foundation, and many others who made this environment possible.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of collaborating, last evening was the launch of \u201cMaker Monday\u201d offered by the Schantz Organ Company here in Orrville.\u00a0 It is a round table discussion that gives area makers a chance to \u201cShow &amp; Tell\u201d some of their product drawings and real-life creations, learn how to combine new technology with conventional tools to enhance their products, and get experienced feedback from their fellow makers on how to either improve or expand upon their ideas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6119\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/maker-monday-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"maker monday\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Over 20 folks attended last evening, many of whom brought projects that they were working on.\u00a0 There were stringed instruments, wooden candle holders, one-of-a-kind fireplace designs, flying drones, and Arduino electronics projects.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Victor Schantz who started this activity.\u00a0 In his words (and above): \u201cThis is\u00a0a great opportunity to see some of the creative minds in our community engaging in the MakerSpace concept.\u201d\u00a0 The next Maker Monday is June 20th at 7:00 p.m. at The Schantz Organ Company in Orrville.\u00a0 Mark your calendar for an exciting time and make new friends in the maker community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ben has been making incredible progress with his homemade CNC machine.\u00a0 What started out as a hobbyist project now is a robust machine that can do amazing work, such as this sign below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6123\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160509_071710-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160509_071710\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ben routed a pallet board with the word \u201cWelcome\u201d, then hand painted the cut areas.\u00a0 He then sanded the board\u2019s surface, removing unwanted paint and giving the lettering a sharp yet rustic finish.\u00a0 And folks are buying these signs, which finances future upgrades to his CNC machine!<\/p>\n<p>A major upgrade addressed the CNC machine\u2019s speed; it ran at a snail\u2019s pace.\u00a0 He started a dialog with local and online friends to discover that his driver boards were too small to control the large stepper motors that move the router around the table.\u00a0 His existing driver boards were even melting wires! \u00a0Take a look at his new driver board (left) compared to his original one:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6127\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/driver-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"driver\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ben now has three of these large driver boards to control all three stepper motors (x, y, and z axis).\u00a0 Now his CNC machine runs three times faster and has more power to cut through wood.\u00a0 Way to go, Ben!\u00a0 Here is a picture of the latest revision of the CNC machine.\u00a0 Now he is busy making wooden iPhone cases.\u00a0 Talk about being creative.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6131\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_1498-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1498\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6135\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/phone-cases-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"phone cases\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our portable 3D printer continually makes road trips to local community organizations and schools to excite students about 3D printing, inventing, creativity, and careers in engineering.\u00a0 It is always well received.\u00a0 Folks soon realize the potential of how these machines turn their ideas into reality.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, we made a trip to Wooster Township School to demonstrate 3D printing to two classes.\u00a0 The kids were amazed and asked dozens of questions, giving me little to time discuss what I originally intended!\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful to see that spark of interest in their eyes, hopefully developing into something more one day.\u00a0 This \u201cmakerspace movement\u201d is allowing everyday people to become inventors right from their homes.\u00a0 It surely enables a new world of possibilities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6139\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160404_143217-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160404_143217\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6143\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160404_150215-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160404_150215\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Back at Wayne College, one of our community members (and a former student), wanted to make a custom glass chessboard.\u00a0 He purchased a thick square of glass from the local glass company, created a design, then laser engraved it onto the glass.\u00a0 The laser engraver\u2019s beam does not reflect on glass.\u00a0 Rather, it cuts into it like a sand blasting effect.\u00a0 The result is quite beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6147\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/checkboard-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"checkboard\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6095\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/05\/3d-printing-news-1-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"3d-printing-news\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s first 3D-printed office building opened this week in Dubai.
