{"id":6163,"date":"2016-06-17T16:01:02","date_gmt":"2016-06-17T20:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=6163"},"modified":"2016-06-24T15:25:04","modified_gmt":"2016-06-24T19:25:04","slug":"u-s-maker-day-maker-monday-at-schantz-organ-a-trip-to-wooster-township-elementary-and-a-rubber-band-powered-card","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/06\/17\/u-s-maker-day-maker-monday-at-schantz-organ-a-trip-to-wooster-township-elementary-and-a-rubber-band-powered-card\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Maker Day, Maker Monday at Schantz Organ, a trip to Wooster Township Elementary, and a Rubber Band Powered Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a busy past couple of weeks, not just in the 3D Lab, but with other exciting events being planned.\u00a0 It seems that the \u201cmaker movement\u201d is exploding everywhere!\u00a0 It is making national news.\u00a0 The Akron local school system is expecting major upgrades this year to support the movement, including our own University of Akron.\u00a0 There has never been a better time to be a maker and celebrate the maker in all of us.<\/p>\n<p>June 17-23 is proclaimed by President Obama as the National Week of Making.\u00a0 As stated, \u201cToday, Americans of all ages have the ability to connect and showcase their creativity through a growing maker movement. Technologies like 3D printing and desktop machine tools are rapidly lowering the costs of production; additional sources of capital such as crowdfunding are reducing barriers to getting started; and the democratization of technology is empowering more makers, helping to boost entrepreneurship and stimulate American manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0 You can read the full proclamation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/06\/16\/presidential-proclamation-national-week-making-2016\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6167\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/nwm-300x252.jpg\" alt=\"nwm\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With makerspaces popping up at Wayne College, The Schanz Organ Company, the Romich Farm, Northwestern Schools, Norwayne Schools, Orrville Schools, etc., it is easy to see that our community is firmly committed to enabling dreams for our children that will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To help celebrate, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/schantzmakerspace\/\">Schantz Makerspace<\/a> is hosting its second Maker Monday next week on June 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the Schantz Organ Company in Orrville.\u00a0 Be sure not to miss it as exciting projects will be announced.\u00a0 It is also a good way to socialize with fellow makers, collaborate on projects, and more.\u00a0 And there will be donuts. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5103\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/schantz-300x43.jpg\" alt=\"schantz\" width=\"437\" height=\"62\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 3D Lab made another Road Trip to Wooster Township Elementary to present 3D printing to dozens of students there.\u00a0 We talked about what it means to be a \u201cmaker\u201d and how problems are solved through engineering and a creative mind.\u00a0 Our trips are always well received with lots of students asking questions.\u00a0 The portable printer (provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romichfoundation.org\/\">Romich Foundation<\/a>) is a big hit; students are fascinated with how the technology works.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6171\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160404_143217-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160404_143217\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6175\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160404_150306-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160404_150306\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wayne College is proud to announce that we will offer our first <a href=\"http:\/\/makerfaire.com\/\">Mini Maker Faire<\/a> for Wayne County!\u00a0 In its early planning stages, the faire will happen in late Spring 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/makerfaire.com\/\">Maker Faires<\/a> provide a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others about it. \u00a0Tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and entrepreneurs all come together to show their projects and to talk about what they have learned. It is a community-based learning event that inspires everyone to become a maker, and connect with people and projects in their local community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6179\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/maker-robot-300x275.jpg\" alt=\"maker robot\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you have something that would like to show, be it a hobby, artistic work, electronics, robotics, drones, music, something fun for kids, food, anything, please consider being an exhibitor!\u00a0 Send an email to <a href=\"mailto:tjh1@uakron.edu\">tjh1@uakron.edu<\/a> to be included as a \u201cmaker\u201d in the faire.\u00a0 If you would like to be involved in the production or sponsorship of this event, please let us know as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Near the end of Spring semester, one of our University of Akron engineering students used the 3D Lab at Wayne College for his final project; a mouse trap powered car.\u00a0 You heard me right.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The downward force of the mouse trap\u2019s spring is converted to tangential energy to the wheels.\u00a0 Students compete to see how far each car can travel (typically eight feet) along inclines that get steeper with each test.\u00a0 The student used a 3D printer to build the wheels.\u00a0 And he won first place in the competition!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6183\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160510_111320-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160510_111320\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6187\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160510_111359-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160510_111359\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, the laser engraver (also provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romichfoundation.org\/\">Romich Foundation<\/a>) receives daily use, even over the summer.\u00a0 Community members visit the 3D Lab to engrave water bottles, wooden plaques, and other items generously provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgrahamdunn.com\/\">P.
