{"id":634,"date":"2014-04-04T12:27:20","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T16:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=634"},"modified":"2014-06-05T12:27:30","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T16:27:30","slug":"air-flow-regulators-phone-stands-and-saving-a-babys-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2014\/04\/04\/air-flow-regulators-phone-stands-and-saving-a-babys-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Air flow regulators, phone stands, and saving a baby&#8217;s life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been busy this week at the Wayne College Maker Space.\u00a0 We printed 3D models for two local companies.\u00a0 The first was a cup to hold liquid resin to see if PLA plastic can hold up to its heat.\u00a0 The second were a couple of objects to see how a 3D printer could reproduce them.<\/p>\n<p>On the local front, students Dusty and Josh are creating new CAD designs.\u00a0 In the Chemistry Lab, there are glass implements that have a difficult time being dried out due to their shape.\u00a0 Dusty created an air distributor that evenly applies airflow to the glass implements:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/air-flow-regulator.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-638\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/air-flow-regulator-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"air flow regulator\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What was amazing about this print is that we printed an object that was hollow in the middle and enclosed on all six sides.\u00a0 Normally, the \u201croof\u201d of the object has to be supported by temporary plastic underneath (called \u201csupports\u201d).\u00a0 But because the object was enclosed, we could not use supports because there would be no way to remove them afterward.<\/p>\n<p>We used the portable 3D printer for this task.\u00a0 When the printer began printing the \u201croof\u201d, it drew long strands of plastic in mid-air, connecting the sides.\u00a0 This seemed impossible, but it worked!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/air-flow-regulator2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-642\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/air-flow-regulator2-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"air flow regulator2\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Josh designed a phone stand for large, wide-format smart phones.\u00a0 He is getting really good at attractive designs in Creo:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/josh-phone-stand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-646\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/josh-phone-stand-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"josh phone stand\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other news, HP made an announced six months ago that they plan to enter the consumer 3D printer market.\u00a0 They realize that 3D printers are becoming mainstream, so they want to be ready with their own product:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9247078\/HP_has_solved_two_big_problems_with_3D_printing\">http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9247078\/HP_has_solved_two_big_problems_with_3D_printing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the medical world, 3D printer technology was used to save a baby\u2019s life by keeping her brochi open due to a birth defect:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/04\/02\/3d-printed-split-saves-babys-life\">http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/04\/02\/3d-printed-split-saves-babys-life<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned for new things happening at the Wayne College Maker Space next week!<\/p>\n<p>Tom<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone, We\u2019ve been busy this week at the Wayne College Maker Space.\u00a0 We printed 3D models for two local companies.\u00a0 The first was a cup to hold liquid resin to see if PLA plastic can hold up to its heat.\u00a0 The second were a couple of objects to see how a 3D printer could reproduce them.
