{"id":6727,"date":"2016-10-27T15:42:43","date_gmt":"2016-10-27T19:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=6727"},"modified":"2016-10-27T15:42:43","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T19:42:43","slug":"sparking-skate-boards-homemade-3d-printers-and-a-visit-holmes-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/10\/27\/sparking-skate-boards-homemade-3d-printers-and-a-visit-holmes-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Sparking skate boards, homemade 3D printers, and a visit Holmes County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Much has been happening in the 3D Lab over the past weeks, despite the brief lapse of regular news from this blog.\u00a0 I have a good excuse for the delay; we are hard at work preparing for the <a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\">Wayne County Mini Maker Faire<\/a> in May!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6703 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/04\/WayneCounty_MMF_logo-300x112.png\" alt=\"waynecounty_mmf_logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue to for these \u201cmakers\u201d to show hobbies, experiments, projects.<\/p>\n<p>We call it the Greatest Show (&amp; Tell) on Earth \u2014 a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness.\u00a0 Glimpse the future and get inspired!<\/p>\n<p>We are accepting applications for makers, so apply soon as space is limited.\u00a0 Click <a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\">here<\/a> then choose \u201cI want to be a Maker\u201d to apply.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lots of interesting projects are happening in the 3D Lab this semester.\u00a0 Ashton, a new student who hangs out there on a daily basis, amazes us with plans to build a 3D printer from scratch!\u00a0 He intends to design and print all of the parts, including some that require metalwork.\u00a0 His CAD skills are amazing, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700114_094458.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6731 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700114_094458-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"img_19700114_094458\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He is currently building the extruder assembly.\u00a0 This involves advancing filament through the nozzle by means of a special \u201cauger\u201d and spare motors from past repairs on our Makerbot printers.\u00a0 Ashton is well on his way!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700122_082922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6735\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700122_082922-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"img_19700122_082922\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tristan, a longtime veteran of the 3D Lab, is into his share of shocking projects as well.\u00a0 And that is literally!\u00a0 He designed and 3D printed his own skateboard wheels, drilled holes into the \u201ctread\u201d area, then inserted non-ferrous stubs of cerium.\u00a0 The result?\u00a0 Wheels that spark when they get too close to other metals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700202_102004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6739\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700202_102004-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"img_19700202_102004\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_19700202_112153.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6743\" can how he created these sparking wheels in the video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VHo9-xMB7-g\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Notice the cool images on the wheels?\u00a0 He and Nathan used a Sharpie marker and the 3D Lab\u2019s laser engraver to create the designs.\u00a0 The marker may not be permanent, but it\u2019s definitely cool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, the 3D Lab made yet another road trip, this time to the Holmes County Fair!\u00a0 Despite hot, humid weather and a torrential downpour that forced folks indoors, many were thrilled at the Wayne College booth to see a 3D printer in-action.\u00a0 The portable 3D printer (Pol-E as we affectionately call her) has traveled to almost 50 locations in less than two years, from schools to community organizations to county fairs.\u00a0 People are always amazed by the technology and about the 3D Lab at Wayne College, a makerspace that is open to everyone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_20160810_1351338.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6747\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/10\/IMG_20160810_1351338-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"img_20160810_1351338\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It seems a new tradition has started in the 3D Lab, born by students who frequent it.\u00a0 In addition to the student-led Flight Club on Monday evenings at 6:00, the room now became the home of aspiring musicians!\u00a0 What started last semester has become a regular thing with sometimes 5-6 guitars, ukuleles, and sometimes 3D printed instruments.\u00a0 The lab has become a hang-out place for Wayne College students, a place to relax, explore, learn, make, and just have fun!<\/p>\n<p><a
