{"id":7079,"date":"2017-02-13T16:11:57","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T20:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=7079"},"modified":"2017-02-13T16:11:57","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T20:11:57","slug":"homemade-3d-printers-infinity-mirrors-and-a-trip-to-kingsway-christian-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2017\/02\/13\/homemade-3d-printers-infinity-mirrors-and-a-trip-to-kingsway-christian-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Homemade 3D printers, infinity mirrors, and a trip to Kingsway Christian School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>The sudden winter storm earlier this week gave our students more reason to hang-out in the 3D Lab and Maker Lounge!\u00a0 We\u2019ve done a lot to improve these areas and have big plans in-store for the coming months.\u00a0 The Maker Lounge is quite successful with lots of students using the improved space.\u00a0 The idea is to promote the \u201cmaker\u201d concept to more students.\u00a0 This way, they become interested in visiting the cool and inventive people in the 3D Lab!<\/p>\n<p>One never knows what new things students are cooking up in the lab.\u00a0 It\u2019s exciting to see how full the 3D Lab becomes on a day-to-day basis.\u00a0 It really does have a life of its own.<\/p>\n<p>One of these cool people is Ashton.\u00a0 He is determined to build a 3D printer of his own, from scratch.\u00a0 He started last semester, acquiring parts, designing and 3D printing other parts, and learning volumes by researching the Internet.\u00a0 Building 3D printers from scratch is nothing new; folks at the <a href=\"http:\/\/hackcanton.com\/\">Canton Hack and Makerspace<\/a> has been doing his a while already.\u00a0 But it is certainly a challenge!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2017\/02\/IMG_19700128_135421.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7083\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2017\/02\/IMG_19700128_135421-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ashton\u2019s design uses an Arduino Mega 2560 for the brain, then attached a \u201cshield\u201d that contains drivers with enough power to run the stepper motors.\u00a0 These motors move the print head in two directions, the print bed in the third direction, and a motor to advance filament through the extruder.\u00a0 The Arduino with shield &amp; drivers looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2017\/02\/IMG_19700128_102010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7087\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2017\/02\/IMG_19700128_102010-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ashton is dedicated to building his 3D printer and we are excited for his progress!\u00a0 He has the Arduino physically rotating the stepper motors, so it\u2019s actually starting to work.\u00a0 Stay tuned as we report more on this project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On a different note, 3D Lab staff Nathan wanted to make a cool \u201cmaker\u201d gift for his younger sister, an \u201cinfinity mirror\u201d.\u00a0 This consists of a pair of parallel mirrors which create a series of smaller and smaller reflections that appear to recede into an infinite distance.<\/p>\n<p>To build his mirror, Nathan laser-cut reflective acrylic using scraps from a previous project.\u00a0 He purchased a roll of white LEDs on a strip, affixed them inside the edges of a box frame donated by P. Maker Faire provides an opportunity to share projects and ideas we don\u2019t encounter every day. It is a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are seeking to highlight your talents and innovations at the first annual <a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\">Wayne County Mini Maker Faire<\/a>.
