Fish, more R\/C car work, and a trip to America Makes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Summer session hasn\u2019t slowed down the activity at the Wayne College Makerspace.\u00a0 Of particular note was a field trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/americamakes.us\/\">America Makes<\/a>, a national 3D printing research center in Youngstown, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/america-makes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-954 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/america-makes.jpg\" alt=\"america makes\" width=\"463\" height=\"93\" fosters engagements with businesses, academia, non-profit organizations, and individuals.\u00a0 Members present challenges, projects, and direction in which AM researches, completes, and documents.\u00a0 For instance, if NASA has a particular project that involves 3D printing, AM researches this project for them.\u00a0 The University of Akron is a proud member of America Makes as well.<\/p>\n<p>The equipment at this facility is impressive.\u00a0 They have almost a dozen consumer-level 3D printers.\u00a0 They also have a StrataSys Fortus, a large refrigerator-style 3D printer width=\"241\">America Makes has a number of 3D printers, including this large-format LulzBot.\u00a0 It can produce very large parts.\u00a0 3D printers use Fused Disposition Modeling for its print radio controlled car.\u00a0 Don\u2019t ask me how it works; I haven\u2019t a clue.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 It is amazing that he is designing this from scratch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/suspension-beginnings3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-990\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/suspension-beginnings3-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"suspension beginnings3\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had a difficult print request, a figure of a fish where there was no flat area to sit on the print bed.\u00a0 Furthermore, there were hollowed out areas that would be difficult to print, as temporary plastic is needed to fill the cavity.<\/p>\n<p>For this job, we used white, dissolvable filament.\u00a0 In areas that needed to be filled to support cavities and strange angles, the dissolvable filament was used instead of regular plastic.\u00a0 After the part printed, we soaked it in limonene to dissolve away the unneeded plastic.\u00a0 Below, the red object in the middle is the fish, the white plastic coming out of its mouth is the dissolvable filament:<\/p>\n<p><a bit of exciting news is that through a collaboration with the Orrville Boys and Girls Club, we will have access to a 3D scanner!\u00a0 This way objects are photographed then immediately 3D printed.\u00a0 It can also be used as a template to reproduce an object in CAD, quickening the process.<\/p>\n<p><a
