Wayne County Mini Maker Faire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Plans are underway for the next <a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\">Wayne County Mini Maker Faire<\/a> on <strong>Saturday, May 19th<\/strong>.\u00a0 Be sure to mark your calendar to attend and especially to <a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/call-for-makers\/\">participate<\/a> as a \u201cmaker\u201d.\u00a0 The Daily Record said it best: \u201cDubbed the \u2018Greatest Show and Tell on Earth\u2019, over <strong>1,300 people<\/strong> flocked to the inaugural faire at the University of Akron Wayne College last year.<\/p>\n<p>What is the Wayne County Mini Maker Faire?\u00a0 It\u2019s a mix of new technology, inventions, interesting people, traditional (and not so traditional) hobbies.\u00a0 From yarn spinning to spinning robots, it\u2019s all part of Maker Faire. \u00a0If you haven\u2019t been a Maker Faire <a href=\"https:\/\/makerfaire.com\/map\/\">anywhere in the world<\/a>, it\u2019s an <strong>unforgettable experience<\/strong>, now here in Wayne County.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/about\/\">These videos<\/a>, taken during the 2017 faire, sum it up perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9667\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/02\/solder-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 faire hosted 70 makers from all corners of the community, many of whom are coming back for the faire this May!\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/makers-exhibits\/\">Click here<\/a> to see all of the interesting and friendly folks who participated last year<\/strong>.\u00a0 There truly is something for everyone.\u00a0 If you attended the faire last year and want to contact one of the makers for more information, you can do so <a href=\"https:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/contact-makers\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Check out the group La Machine, a group of folks who build <strong>massive animated sculptures<\/strong>, such as the elephant below.\u00a0 La Machine was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c7ZbqdZlFso\">Nantes France Maker Faire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c7ZbqdZlFso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9671\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/02\/elephant-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are <strong>proud to showcase Ohio makers<\/strong> who participated in the Wayne County Mini Maker Faire.\u00a0 One such person is <strong>Adam Smith from the University of Akron<\/strong>, born in Texas. \u00a0Adam was an undergraduate at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and then earned a PhD from MIT. \u00a0After graduating in 2008, Adam moved to UC Berkeley to do postdoctoral work with Jay T Groves. \u00a0There his research applied fluorescence spectroscopy methods to problems in cell biology. \u00a0In 2012, he started his own lab at the University of Akron, where he is currently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9675\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/02\/spec-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9679\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/02\/adam-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the 2017 faire, his group brought materials for people to build a cardboard spectrometers that they took home. \u00a0Visible absorption spectroscopy has a wide range of applications in chemistry labs, biomedical research, and clinical diagnostics. His lab also developed the <strong>SpecPhone<\/strong>: a spectrophotometer that can be made with a 3D printer, some inexpensive parts, and a smartphone.
