The Zips open up Football Season at home after game cancelation

The University of Akron Football team kicks off the season with the home opener against Morgan State this Saturday at 3:30 pm.

After their first game was cancelled due to weather, the Zips will feature for the first time this season on their own grounds. Five of their seven wins and only one loss were at home last year. They have played Morgan State at home on two previous occasion – both of which were blowout wins for the roos and milestones in Akron. The first was the first game played in Infocision stadium, and the other was Head Coach Terry Bowdon’s first game at home for Akron.

Akron is returning a number of familiar faces during the 2018 season. Senior Ulysees Gilbert, who recorded 141 tackles, 9.5 TFL, five sacks, three interceptions, and a fumble in 2017, is a two-time All-MAC LB. Gilbert was also voted by his teammates to be a captain. WR Kwadarrius Smith saw a breakout in 2017 with 726 yards and seven touchdowns. Speed is Smith’s top weapon. He can use it to create space between defenders and attack zones. He will look to get over the top for QB Kato Nelson. Nelson started in place of suspended QB Thomas Woodson in 2017. He threw 70-140 for 989 yards, and 8 touchdowns. His playing style is different than Woodson’s, so it should prove exciting to see how the offense will shape out around Nelson.

Morgan State is 0-1 on the season after a week one loss to Towson. They are being coached by their defensive coordinator, Ernest Jones, as an interim coach.

Cavs top the Bucks behind LBJ’s triple-double.

Lebron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory over the Milwaukee Bucks with a big triple-double at the Q.
LBJ recorded an impressive 40pt, 12 rebound, 10 assist triple-double on the way to a 124-117 victory. His passing, which has been on display in recent weeks, was right on par with expectations of the King. He bounced it to a wide open Jeff green mid-way through the second quarter on a behind the back dime. James is known for turning the switch late season – a signature hiatus from social media tends to signal his ascension towards playoff-Bron.
Kevin Love made his return from injury in tonight’s game. His 4-9 from three point land accounted for most of his 18 point evening. He also grabbed seven rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of work. Cavs fans have been patiently standing-by for Love’s return to action. The Cavs big has been a double-double machine this season. He has returned right on schedule to move towards the post season in-form.
Elsewhere, Jordan Clarkson scored 17 from the bench. Jeff Green put up 14 points. You can catch the Cavs in action again Wednesday march 21 2018 in Cleveland against the Toronto Raptors.

Buffalo sends Kent packing to advance to the MAC Tournament final

The Buffalo Bulls downed Kent State 78-61 to advance to the MAC Tournament finals. The Buffalo effort was spearheaded by the scoring efforts of Jeremy Harris. He tallied 22 points and 7 rebounds for the Bulls. He was most notably a threat in transition, where his speed and finishing ability really flourished.
The Flashes failed to mount any sort of serious come back in the game. The usually explosive offense contributions from Jaelen Avery and Jaylin Walker were not present at the Q. Avery finished as the top scorer for Kent with 16. Kent also struggled finding a way to stop Buffalo on transition. Typically a formidable body roaming the paint, De La Rosa of Kent was out-muscled by Buffalo big man Perkins. Kent State struggled in transition offense as well on a night that did not do justice by them.
The MAC Tournament Finals will be Friday March 9 between the Buffalo Bulls and the Toledo Rockets.

Bulls Blast Broncos for Berth in Championship Game

The Buffalo Bulls squared off against the Western Michigan Broncos on Friday, March 9, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland for the MAC Women’s Quarterfinal. Buffalo got off to a hot start thanks to the lightning fast speed of Stephanie Reid, the senior guard from Australia. Cassie Ousler also contributed with two fadeaway jumpers. But the Broncos would not let the Bulls run away with it that early as Jordan Walker and Breanna Mobley battled back and went up 9-8 in the first quarter. The Bulls would then go on an unstoppable 12-0 run to end the first quarter and make the score 20-9 after one. The second quarter started off all Western Michigan as Breanna Mobley scored 6 unanswered points. But just as the Broncos started to find their groove, Buffalo came back and took the lead. Summer Hemphill stepped up big for the Bulls and Autumn Jones contributed off the bench.

The score at halftime would end up being Buffalo 32, Broncos 24.

The second half would be much like the first. The broncos would hit a shit and then the Bulls would answer back right away. It was not until mid way through the third quarter that Buffalo went on an amazing run thanks to Autumn Jones’ 4 point play which she then followed up with another 3 the next possession. The score at the end of the third would be 59-36, all Buffalo. Western Michigan’s struggles seem to come from their inability to shoot from beyond the arch, 20% from three, and defensive breakdowns against the Bulls’ quickness and physicality. Breanna Mobley was the Broncos only bright spot as she would finish the game with 21 points. For the Bulls their top scorers were Cierra Dillard with 17 points and Stephanie Reid with 12 points. The final result would be Buffalo 85, Western Michigan 53. Buffalo will play on Saturday in the MAC Championship Game against Central Michigan University.

Toledo narrowly defeat Miami to advance in the MAC Tournament.

The Toledo Rockets downed the Miami RedHawks at Quicken Loans Arena to advance to the Semi-finals of the MAC Tournament. The final score was 71-69. Jaelan Sanford lead scoring with 21 points.
Nike Subande and Darrian Ringo of Miami fought hard to keep the game close, scoring 20 and 19 respectively. The rest of the starting five for Miami turned in a disappointing 13 points, which is likely to blame for the team coming up just a bucket short. The Redhawks also shot significantly better from beyond the arc, further adding to the question marks surrounding their defeat. Their performance was not enough to silence the lights out shooting of Sanford.
Toledo will play the winner of the game between Akron and Eastern Michigan in the semi-finals. Stay tuned to for more updates regarding results and game times.
