Economics Research Grant

Main Purpose: To support research designed to improve the understanding of the processes and institutions of the U.S. economy and of the world system of which it is a part. Multi-disciplinary and multi-investigator research is encouraged and emphasized. Funding is also available for “interdisciplinary research that strengthens links among economics and the other social and behavioral sciences as well as mathematics and statistics.”

Research in almost all areas of economics can be supported:

  • Econometrics
  • Economic history
  • Environmental economics
  • Finance
  • Industrial organization
  • International economics
  • Labor economics
  • Macroeconomics
  • Mathematical economics
  • Public finance

Benefits: This grant can be used for doctoral dissertation improvement, conferences, workshops, symposia, experimental research, data collection and dissemination, computer equipment and other instrumentation, and research experience for undergraduates.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Although not a requirement, proposals from junior faculty, women, underrepresented minorities, and Research Undergraduate Institutions are encouraged.
  • For Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants:
    • The dissertation advisor should be listed as the Principal Investigator and the student as the Co-Principal Investigator. It should be clear however that the proposal is written by, and the research conducted by, the student.
    • The Proposal Title should read, “Doctoral Dissertation Research in Economics: ….”

Sociology Program Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Awards

Main Purpose: To support doctoral dissertation research in all areas of sociology including societies, institutions, groups, and demography. “The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on:

  • Organizations and organizational behavior
  • Population dynamics
  • Social movements
  • Social groups
  • Labor force participation
  • Stratification and mobility
  • Family and social networks
  • Socialization and gender roles
  • The sociology of science and technology.

Benefits: Financial support for doctoral dissertation research. Funding can be used for data gathering, statistical or methodological training, meeting with other scholars, and field work away from student’s main campus.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Doctoral student in sociology
  • Four Key Components of the Research Proposal
    • Based on theoretically grounded issues
    • Based on empirical observation or be subject to empirical validation or illustration
    • Research design that is appropriate for the research question
    • Research must advance understanding of social processes, structures, and methods

The Awesome Foundation Grants

Main Purpose: The Awesome Foundation supports projects of all kinds that will  “conserve, sustain, and support the worldwide ecosystem of awesomeness. Projects have included efforts in a wide range of areas including technology, arts, social good, and beyond.” It is “a micro-genius grant for flashes of micro-brilliance.”

Benefits: $1,000

Charles Koch Foundation: Dissertation Research Proposals

Main Purpose: To support research that will help  foster societal well-being. This includes the “exploration of the role free societies play in advancing human well-being and prosperity”

Basic Psychological Science Research Grant

Main Purpose: To assist students in funding psychological science research, some specific to diversity-focused research.

Benefits: 

  • $1,000 to be used for research (thesis, dissertation,  or other)
  • Some $1,000 grants are available for research directly related to diversity

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduate student enrolled at least half-time at an accredited university
  • Member of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students
    • Students who are members of the American Psychological Association as undergraduate student affiliates, associate member, or other member status, must change their status to graduate student affiliate prior to applying

APAGS/Psi Chi Junior Scientist Fellowship

Main Purpose: To support young graduate students in a research-oriented graduate program.

Benefits:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be entering first year or first semester of second year of a research-oriented master’s or doctorate program
  • If program has a practice component, applicant must describe research intentions in personal statement essay
  • Must be a member of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students AND be a member of Psi Chi (therefore first year students must have joined Psi Chi as an undergraduate)

American Psychological Association Dissertation Research Award

Main Purpose: To help science-oriented doctoral students of psychology with the costs of research.

Benefits:

  • 30-40 grants of $1,000 each
  • Several larger $5,000 grants

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduate student in psychology at an accredited college university in The United States or Canada
  • In good standing with their university
  • Full-time student or working on dissertation research for an equivalent of full-time enrollment (regardless of actual registration status)
  • Student affiliate or associate member of The American Psychological Association
  • Dissertation proposal approved by dissertation committee
  • May not have received a previous APA Dissertation Research Award
