Main Purpose: To fund new directions of research regarding petroleum or fossil fuels.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Research must be directly related to petroleum or fossil fuels at nonprofit institutions (usually colleges and universities)
  • Researcher should not have published or received financial support from another funding agency for current proposed research
  • Research must be a “new direction” rather than an extension of the researcher’s previous research

American Indian Graduate Center Fellowship

Main Purpose: To support American Indian and Alaskan Native graduate students.

Benefits: $1,000-$5,000 per academic year

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Pursuing a graduate degree at an institution in The United States
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Enrolled member of a federally recognized American Indian or Alaskan Native group or able to provide documentation of descent (one-fourth degree verifiable federally recognized Indian blood) by submitting a Tribal Eligibility Certificate

Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (DDIG)

Main Purpose: To support research in the biological sciences, specifically in environmental biology or animal behavior.

Benefits:

  • $13,000-$16,000 research grant
  • Funds can be used for “participation in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.”

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Student must have advanced to candidacy for a Ph.D. before the proposal deadline
  • Student must be enrolled in a U.S. institution but citizenship is not required

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supports education and research among the science and engineering communities in order to address environmental issues.

EPA Marshall Scholarship Program

Main Focus: Tuition Assistance for students pursuing a graduate degree in an environmentally related technical field with a global focus. This is a partnership with The United Kingdom’s government.

“The Geography and Spatial Sciences Program sponsors research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on Earth. Investigators are encouraged to propose plans for research about the nature, causes, and consequences of human activity and natural environmental processes across a range of scales.”

Main Purpose: To promote research, education, and training in the area of geography and spacial studies.

Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (AGS-PRF)

Main Purpose: To support beginning researchers within 3 years of completing their PhD in carrying out independent research projects in the areas of atmospheric and geospace sciences.

Benefits:

  • Stipend of $58,000 per year paid monthly at the rate of $4,833 directly to the Fellow
  • An annual lump sum fellowship allowance of $28,000 to support research and publication activities
  • Fellowship may be taken to the institution or facility of choice

Time Limit: up to 2 years

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current graduate student OR have held a PhD for no more than 3 years
  • Degree in the field of science or engineering with research plans falling in the areas of atmospheric and geospace sciences
  • U.S. citizen or legally admitted permanent resident
  • Proposal must be submitted by an individual, not the institution
  • Individual must identify a host institution or sponsoring scientist
  • May not concurrently submit the same research project to another NSF program
