CORRECTION- December 11-12: UL Professional Headshots

Professional photographers will be available in the Bay Room to take headshots of UL staff and faculty on the afternoon of December 11 and morning of December 12. Each portrait session will be 10 minutes and you will have the opportunity to choose your favorite pose. The headshots can be used for LibGuides, committee/department websites, professional organizations, e-digest announcements, etc.  It is not mandatory.

Library Snapshot Day- Wednesday, November 20, 2013

SNAPSHOTDay2013-300x138pxIt’s picture day again at the University Libraries.

This Wednesday, November 20 the UL will be participating in Ohio Library Snapshot Day 2013: A Day in the Life of Ohio Libraries.

We will be documenting what happens on a typical day at all of our locations, including but not limited to:

  • students’ use of the building
  • staff behind the scenes
  • student workers

Back by popular demand will be the whiteboard in Bierce Lobby and new this year we will be running an instagram contest for the students via our Facebook page. #biercelibrary

The stories and photos we collect will be added to those of other libraries across the state to raise awareness about the important role of libraries in Ohio.

No one will be forced to be in pictures, but you can volunteer to be in them, or take your own photos to submit to our Flickr photo stream showing us what you do/see. (These pictures can be e-mailed to Stephanie.)

Volunteer Opportunity: Honors College Scholarship Friday

The Honors College is looking for volunteers to help interview potential incoming Honors students for Invitation to Excellence: Scholarship Friday next Friday, November 22. The time commitment for an interviewer is Noon – 2 p.m. and/or 3-5 p.m. 

For just a few hours of your time this is a fun and easy opportunity to interact with outstanding students and encourage them to attend UA. And it really is fun- just ask Ann, Phyllis or Stephanie who are all returning interviewers this year.

Honors Project Exhibit in ETL Beginning November 18

The ETL is getting an exciting face-lift for the end of the semester.

Two graphic design seniors will be displaying their honor’s projects in room 168 beginning November 18th. AJ Poholski’s project is based on environmental disasters affecting bodies of water. Ashley Hauser’s project displays research on what inspires and kills creativity. The joint exhibit is mixed media using video as well as 2-D design.

The students are hosting a small reception in the space Monday, November 18 from 5:30-7pm please stop by if you are able and spread the word.

Don Appleby Awarded Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award

Don Appleby was awarded the prestigious Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award during the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) Annual Conference on October 25, 2013.

The award recognizes an individual who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship statewide and who has provided leadership in the promotion of ALAO through service such as committee membership, executive board office, or interest group office.

Don was nominated by Alisa Mizikar of Wittenberg University. A member since 2005, he was recognized for his many years of service on the Executive Board as well as the Conference Planning Committee. Don is currently serving his second term as Treasurer.

Halloween Fun at Bierce

Need a place to donate your leftover candy? Bring it to Bierce! We are hosting a few fun themed activities on Thursday to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve.

There will be a photobooth set-up in Joe LaRose’s old office, candy at the service desks and a fun Search-A-Roo Halloween themed activity to win a study room for pre-finals week.

Volunteers are needed to staff a table in the lobby from 10am-2pm to handout candy and the activity.

Be sure to encourage your students (and colleagues) to get in the spirit and dress up!

UL Hourly Timecard Training- Nov 14

Mark your calendars! IT will be hosting a training for hourly library employees from 10-11:30am on November 14, 2013 in Bierce 274.

UL Will Celebrate Banned Book Week Sept 22-28

The University Libraries will be celebrating Banned Book Week September 22-28, 2013.

Activities throughout the week will include:

Display cases:

  • 6-7 display cases in Bierce featuring banned books: The Outsiders, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter Series; The Giver, etc
  • Check out Caitlin’s pinterest page for more ideas

Lunchtime Dramatic readings from banned books:

  • Volunteers will provide 10 min dramatic (or not so dramatic) readings of excerpts from banned and challenged books.
  • Faculty, students, and staff are all welcome to participate!

From eDigest: New Spaces for Student Services

New year and new spaces for some
student services on campus

You will notice as fall semester begins that the offices of some of our student services have new names, new locations, or both. Many are now part of the Office of Student Success, headed by Jim Tressel, who has a new title — Vice President for Student Success. Learn more at the Office of Vice President for Student Success.The changes have been made to ensure the best possible Akron Experience for our students, right from their first days on campus. The goal with the moves is to make the student services provided by these offices as visible and accessible as possible to the students who need them throughout their years at UA.

Here is the list of the offices with new addresses. All telephone extensions and department ZIP+4 codes will remain the same. Please note: All Student Life offices are now located on the first floor of the Student Union.

 The Career Center has moved to Student Union 211 from Simmons HalI 301.

 The Center for Academic Advising and Student Success has moved to Simmons HalI 301 from Schrank Hall South 9.

 The Zip Card Office in the Student Union has moved to Honors Complex 142 (the former location of the Custom Apparel Store).

 Student Employment has moved from Simmons HalI 301 to Simmons HalI 202B and 202C in the Office of Student Financial Aid.

 Student Judicial Affairs has moved to Simmons HalI 302 from Student Union 216.

 Student Life (Administrative Offices) has moved to Student Union 131 from Student Union 211.

 The Roo Express Office has moved to Quaker Square R101 from Quaker Square 160.
