Angela Coates, graduate research assistant at The University of Akron (UA), was selected as the 2011 OTC Student of the Year (SOY). As SOY, she will be recognized at the CUTC Annual Awards Ceremony held in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the Transportation Research Board’s Annual Meeting. Awardees are nominated based upon a demonstrated dedication to innovation in transportation research through coursework, research and outreach. Angela clearly exemplifies these qualities.Angela is an exceptional student, demonstrating outstanding academic performance. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from The University of Akron with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and continues to be at the top of her classes throughout her graduate studies. She is a focused and motivated student, and these qualities shine through in every aspect of her work. She is a role model for her fellow students, displaying a great sense of responsibility and intellectual capability.

As a graduate research assistant under advisor Dr. Ping Yi, Angela has consistently proved that she is a valuable asset to UA’s transportation engineering research team. She is reliable, dedicated, and hard-working. Her valuable and effective problem solving initiatives, as well as her ability to meet deadlines while producing quality work, have earned her the respect of her colleagues. She has co-authored paper submissions to the Ohio Transportation Consortium and the Transportation Research Board, the latter resulting in selection for both publication and presentation at the 2012 Transportation Research Board Annual Conference. Angela has already made great contributions through her research efforts thus far as she continues to excel in her work.
