Scholarship & Other Writing
Greetings from IPPI Research Professor & Executive Director Joshua Kresh
Spring has been a productive season at IPPI, and we have continued building our community of scholars, engaging in the policy and legal debates shaping IP law, producing rigorous research, and bringing IP to broader audiences.
We welcomed a promising new cohort of the Edison Fellowship and convened the inaugural calls of our High Tech and Biopharma Scholars Councils, which are already generating research ideas and giving scholars a venue to share their work. Our fellows and affiliates carried that scholarship into the public square, speaking at USPTO listening sessions, filing an amicus brief in Hikma v. Amarin, and publishing the first reports in our series on biopharma patent myths.
This June, as will be detailed in our next report, we also turned outward to the public, hosting a webinar on those myths and pending legislation, running another WIPO-U.S. Summer School on IP, and marking America’s 250th anniversary with a virtual panel on the four pillars of IP and their place in our national story.
As always, we have projects on the way and will share details as things progress.
Best regards,
Joshua Kresh
Research Professor & Executive Director

- Read about Dr. Vassallo and his work. Says Dr. Vassallo, “I am honored to join the IPPI. My research on patent damages has already benefited greatly from the insights of their outstanding team. Operating at the intersection of academia, industry, and legal and economic policy, the IPPI cultivates research that enhances incentives for technological progress across a variety of industries.”
- Read more about Professor Ferrari and her work. Says Professor Ferrari, “I am pleased to join IPPI at a time when the interaction between academic research, regulatory frameworks, and industrial policy is increasingly shaping innovation governance. The Institute’s role in fostering dialogue between scholarship and policymaking represents a valuable contribution to the development of balanced intellectual property systems. I look forward to engaging in initiatives aimed at strengthening access to patent frameworks, supporting innovation capacities in strategic sectors, and promoting coherent policy approaches in areas such as healthcare and advanced technologies. These efforts are essential to ensuring that legal systems effectively respond to technological change while supporting sustainable economic development.”
- Read more about Mr. Harlan and his work. Says Mr. Harlan, “I read standards licensing commitments as binding promises under the contract law that actually governs them, then follow that reading through injunctions, holdout, and the rights of the firms that fund the underlying research.
