Hello everyone,
It’s hard to believe that mid-semester is upon us at Wayne College with students taking exams and working on end-of-semester projects. Engineering students are already building sample model rockets for the upcoming launch in May. Speaking of classes, if you are interested in degrees offered by Wayne and Akron campuses, feel free to visit the Student Life Building from 10:00-1:00 this Tuesday, March 19th for UA On Display! This event has the various colleges and departments from the Akron campus here at the Wayne campus, talking about the variety of opportunities available at the main campus.
Families are welcome to visit the lab to learn 3D printing, make stickers, buttons, and laser engraved gifts. We show you how to use the equipment; you make the stuff! To plan a visit, please let us know the day & time of your arrival via tjh1@uakron.edu or 330-684-8722 so that we have staff available. People under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our hours of operation are listed here.
Community member John thoroughly enjoys the laser engraver/cutter in the 3D Lab, inventing things like shadow boxes for radios, custom earrings, and more. Lately, he created a custom iPad car mount by layering laser-cut plywood. This allows flat-medium devices like laser engravers to maker three dimensional items, especially useful for topological maps. Click here for more ideas that you can make with an engraver; you will be surprised! John uses Affinity Designer for his designs, a vector art program.
The 3D Lab has been a popular place for its dye sublimation printer and heat press. Lately, a group from Peachy Parties Ohio visited the lab to make custom t-shirts and ceramic mugs We have an Epson inkjet printer retrofitted with dye sublimation ink that prints onto special paper, making “heat transfer sheets” that can be pressed onto clothing and other flat items. They did a great job learning and using the equipment, quite self sufficient and happy!
Our friends at Schantz Makerspace have been busy teaching community classes. The last two Saturday mornings they had participants building small table top CNC routers. Each individual learned how to build the machine as well as use the software to bring their ideas to life.
The next Schantz Makerspace Maker Monday is scheduled for March 18 from 7-9 p.m. at the Romich Foundation Makerspace, 13875 Cleveland Road, Creston. Their time together will include presentations from a number of regulars on recent projects. These include Jeff Snure showing and discussing epoxy filled wood. There are a number people doing this at the moment, including those building a conference table for IncludeAbility and another making a narrow table for home.
To sign up for future Schantz Makerspace classes, be sure to watch your email and check their Facebook account for updates. Please visit www.schantzmakerspace.com to signup for their mailing list!
Stay tuned next month as we reveal more interesting things happening the 3D Lab!
Until then,
Tom
