Hello everyone,
The Fall semester is well underway in its seventh week of classes. The continuous rainfall this past week brought down lots of leaves, making for a beautiful Fall atmosphere and campus! We recently hosted Fall Fest at Wayne College to celebrate the season, offering games, mechanical pumpkin rides, custom street signs pizza, popcorn, and a caramel apple bar the UA Wayne College community. What a blast!
Students, faculty, and staff are invited on Wednesday, October 23rd to the Wayne College Jack O’Lantern Jubilee! Not only will this event feature Anthem & Aria, the mentalist duo (as seen on Hulu and America’s Got Talent,) but we will also have trick or treat, a fun pumpkin make and take, and a department jack-o’lantern contest!
Everyone is welcome to visit the lab to learn 3D printing and make stickers, buttons, and laser engraved gifts. We show you how to use the equipment; you make the stuff! Please see the attached list of services that we can help you make.
To plan a visit, please let us know the day & time of your arrival via tjh1@uakron.edu or 330-684-8722 so that we have staff available. People under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our hours of operation are listed here.
Ohio’s Hospice recently hosted an activity at the Wayne College 3D Lab. Camp Waves of Emotion is a four-day grief camp for children ages 7-12 who have lost a parent, sibling or significant loved one. During the camp, a bereavement counseling professional and trained staff utilized art, music, play, and grief curriculum to assist children in identifying their unspoken feelings and process their grief.
During the visit, we showed the kids how to laser engrave photo frames with names, phrases, and clipart that represented their loved ones. We also made personalized die-cut stickers for each kid! It was a meaningful time for all.
Community member Lauren continues to use the 3D Lab to produce beautiful pieces and decorations for her wedding planning business. She is very creative with her designs and finds creative uses of the machines in the lab. In the below photos, Lauren laser-cut acrylic lettering to create a textured sign, dye sublimated onto linen to make vertical banners, and used the poster printer to create guest lists. And her young one even got a full introduction into 3D printing!
The Schantz Organ Company opens its doors to creative, like minded people who help them to encourage and teach the makers of tomorrow. Roughly 10 years ago, the Schantz MakerSpace formed a community filled with enthusiastic makers who want to bring their creative ideas to life but lack the necessary tools or experience. The group strives to provide educational opportunities and experiences for people who like to build, invent, tinker, and/or learn new skills.
In addition to classes, the group meets monthly at the Romich Foundation Makerspace in Creston. The Wayne College 3D Lab had the honor of hosting its September meeting! The topic for the evening was the Prusa XL 3D printer, a five-toolhead machine capable of printing in multiple colors and/materials. Norm gave a great talk on about the printer while Tom described the mission, equipment, and services available in the 3D Lab. The meeting was packed and everyone had a great time.
Stay tuned next month as we reveal more interesting things happening the 3D Lab!
Until then,
Tom
