Hello everyone,
The fall semester is almost at an end with Finals Week next week. It’s been a busy time in the 3D Lab with frequent visits by community and student engineers making custom 3D printed robot parts for class projects, the recent of which was the notoriously difficult stair climbing challenge. Our students look forward to a month of taking it easy and being with loved ones.
Make Christmas Gifts it the 3D Lab!
Why buy Christmas gifts when you can make them? Handmade gifts are original and have sentimental value; they also are a gift to the maker simply from the joy of creating something new! We have a number of items donated by P. Graham Dunn that can be personalized to make nice gifts.
Our Epilog laser engraver has a webpage full of creative ideas. Their Sample Club showcases projects for making gifts complete with pictures and instructions. We are happy to show you how!
One such idea is a custom wind chime that makes the perfect addition to any front porch, garden area, or balcony. Easily found on Amazon, the 3D Lab can help you engrave the chime’s “sail” with a welcome message, family name, etc., resulting in a beautiful, personalized Christmas gift.
Want to make 3D printed gifts for loved ones? Visit Printables or Thingiverse for gift ideas! Check out these beautiful ornaments that you can make on a 3D printer.
The 3D Lab is open for walk-ins Monday-Friday from 8:00-4:00 p.m.through December 16th. Appointments are required for the week of December 19-22nd; please email mailto:tjh1@uakron.edu to request a time. After that, the 3D Lab is closed for the holidays until Monday, January 2nd.
Custom Apparel with the Heat Press
Recently in the 3D Lab, Bev and Matthew have been working with the vinyl cutter and heat press. The vinyl cutter cuts stickers and paper, similar to a Cricut. It also supports heat transfer vinyl for permanent decals onto clothing and other surfaces.
Bev made “handy” dish towels while Matthew made shirts to promote Key Club International, a Wayne County Schools Career Center branch of Kiwanis. This is a student-led organization that encourages leadership through serving others. Bev and Matthew bought towels & shirts, we provided the rest!
Visit to Dalton Middle School
Last month, the 3D Lab made an offsite visit to Dalton Middle School. There, instructors Justin Abshear and Laura Grimm created a STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Arts, and Math) elective for 8th grade students. DMS was one of the first school districts in Wayne County to have a STEAM program. The school now has STEM/STEAM education for all students K-12. With major support from the community, Laura planned and built an awesome greenhouse, teaching students the joy of working in the dirt and growing a wide variety of plants.
We brought a 3D printer to the group, talked about careers in engineering, and how 3D printing is used in many careers from veterinary services, medical, civil engineering, culinary arts, and much more. Students were curious and asked lots of questions, a good sign of an interested group!
Stay tuned next month as we introduce interesting folks who participated in the Maker Faire last May!
