The Community Archaeology Program is an outreach of University students and faculty to the local and regional community. Our goal is to assist community organizations, local public and government agencies by identifying archaeological resources present on their properties for management and historic preservation purposes in tandem with interpretation and education of local history provided through archaeological research. Such partnerships benefit both the University and the local community while enhancing archaeological understanding of the past. Community involvement not only builds public support for the stewardship of archaeological sites but also enriches the quality of the archaeological research. Local informants bring their own unique perspectives and insights on the past that can inform and enrich the archaeological interpretation. At the same time, the community benefit when archaeology is utilized to help meet local needs as preservation is a key component to revitalization. Throughout the process, our students benefit through service learning and internships.
