The trade journal The Manufacturer and Builder, in 1894, notes “ …the quarries of Northeastern Ohio, and the adjacent region, are famous the country over for the remarkable adaptability of every grade, from the hardest coarse stone suitable for the rough service of dressing castings, to the softer, finer qualities adaptable for tools.”

The first stones to come from Deep Lock and adjacent Peninsula quarries were used for canal locks and building stones. Finer grain stone found deeper within the rock strata were formed into grindstones, pulp stones and millstones and sold all over the country and in Canada. Although ownership and company names changed over the years, the Cleveland Stone Company, was the major owner and owned many quarries in the region.
