UA Women Meet and Greet on Instagram

By Ashleigh Bonina

This project aims to bring attention to the vast differences and changes that have taken place throughout the history surrounding women at The University of Akron. Over the years there have been immense changes when it comes to the courses of study women chose, their areas of focus, the classes that have been offered, enrollment rates and so much more. There was a time when women had specific majors and degrees that they were expected to enroll and graduate with. Luckily, times have changed at The University of Akron women are expected to pursue any major they identify with and enjoy doing.

My hope is that this project will bring together women dating back to the 1950’s all the way through to the present incoming women students.

In the beginning, my blogging and accompanying Instagram account will focus on the differences that are seen between graduates of the past and the current attendees of The University of Akron. This includes the limited majors offered to women in the past compared to the vast amount of options available today. Also, we will be looking at the differences in the types of courses offered, the time women spent in classes, and the organizations that the university made available to women.

My hope is that women of all ages will participate in answering questions, meaningful conversations and healthy debates about these differences. The idea of this instagram page is to create “commentary” and dialogue between 1950’s, Donna, and 1960’s, Margie. These women will help us see how things have changed over the years and help start other conversations among women.
