(1) List your judicial experience (courts and years)
First District Court of Appeals – since April 2015

(2) What about your non-judicial legal experience qualifies you to be a judge?
Prior to becoming a judge, I served as a state legislator for six years. I quickly took on important roles and developed into a leader at the statehouse. I chaired important standing committees, and was appointed to various other committees and boards. As a legislator, I gained invaluable experience into developing, crafting and implementing policies, and how to clearly express these policies through the creation or amendments to statutes. I have a broad and deep understanding of the legislative process that greatly helps in the interpretation of statutes. My service as a State Representative also broadened my respect for the separation of powers, and the importance of limiting the role of judges to interpretation of statutes. In addition to serving in the legislature, I was an attorney for Cincinnati law firms and a major Cincinnati corporation. I tried many cases before judge and juries across the state at various levels of the court system, as well as argued appeals in various courts of appeals in Ohio. Through the years, I have developed many lifelong friendships with other professionals in the legal community and beyond. The combination of my experience as a state legislator and a trial attorney enables me to approach cases with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of legal and procedural issues and constraints.

(3) Why are you running for this particular court seat?
I have the honor of being appointed to this seat on the Court of Appeals by Governor Kasich in early 2015, and am running to continue serving the current term. I thoroughly enjoy the work involved in hearing and deciding appeals, and being an important participant in our system of justice. I treat all parties with respect, and am firm and fair in the administration of justice through the appeals we decide. I look forward to continuing my lifelong commitment to community service.
