Brief Summary
Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.
Eligible projects usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials and publications, archaeological site reports, translations, or editions. Projects must incorporate analysis and not result solely in the collection of data.
Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months.
Summer Stipends support projects at any stage of development. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research.
Summer Stipends are awarded to individual scholars. Organizations are not eligible to apply.

Program Statistics
In the last five competitions the Summer Stipends program received an average of 834 applications per year. The program made an average of 77 awards per year, for a funding ratio of 9 percent.

Application and Program Information
NEH strongly encourages prospective applicants to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and application instructions located on the NEH website. All applicants must submit their applications through grants.gov by the deadline of September 26,2018.
This program requires all tenured or tenure-track applicants to be nominated by an official of their campus; The University of Akron’s nominating official is Kathryn Watkins (kwatkin@uakron.edu or 330-972-6764). Each institution may nominate up to 2 faculty members for the NEH Summer Stipends program.
