Design, Fabrication and Testing of a Long Service Life Implantable Glucose Sensor for Diabetes Management

Monday, March 14, 2016

Whitby Hall, Room 211, 12-1 pm

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world, and 29.1 million patients reside in US. The diagnosis and management of diabetes requires accurate and convenient monitoring of blood glucose levels by glucose sensors, which account for about 85% of the entire biosensor market. The objective of this work is to design, fabricate and test a prototype implantable glucose sensor with longer service life, improved stability and higher sensitivity by using an advanced polymeric material, which is recently developed in my lab. I believe this new material can solve many long-standing problems of implantable glucose sensors.

Dr. Cheng is an Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Akron.

Department of the Air Force Grant Opportunities

Center of Excellence: Astrodynamics

Deadline: April 25, 2016

AFOSR is seeking unclassified proposals that do not contain proprietary information for a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Astrodynamics. This center is a joint projectbetween the AFRL’s Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Space Vehicles Directorate. The CoE will extend the research capabilities of AFRL and provide opportunities for a new generation of US scientists and engineers to address Air Force basic research needs.

NSF Grant Opportunities

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center

Deadline: July 1, 2016 (preliminary); December 2, 2016 (full proposal)

Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) provide sustained support of interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering. MRSECs address research of a scope and complexity requiring the scale, synergy, and interdisciplinarity provided by a campus-based research center. They support materials research infrastructure in the United States, promote active collaboration between universities and other sectors, including industry and international institutions, and contribute to the development of a national network of university-based centers in materials research, education, and facilities. A MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership.
