National Endowment for the Humanities: Humanities Connections Program

The Humanities Connections program encourages faculty members within the humanities department and their counterparts within the social and natural sciences to create partnerships that support new and innovative approaches to learning.

The program will fund in two levels: Planning and Implementation.

“Humanities Connections projects must include:

  • substantive and purposeful integration of the subject matter, perspectives, and pedagogical approaches of two or more disciplines (with a minimum of one in and one outside of the humanities)
  • collaboration between faculty from two or more departments or schools at one or more institutions
  • experiential learning as an intrinsic part of the proposed curriculum
  • long-term institutional support for the proposed curriculum innovation(s)

Competitive applications will demonstrate:

  • that the proposed curricular project expands the role of the humanities in addressing significant and compelling topics or issues in undergraduate education at the applicant institution(s)
  • that these projects develop the intellectual skills and habits of mind cultivated by the study of the humanities
  • that faculty and students will benefit from meaningful collaborations in teaching and learning across disciplines as a result of the project”

National Endowment for the Arts FY 2021 Funding Guidelines Posted

Guidelines and application materials for four National Endowment for the Arts funding categories–Grants for Arts Projects, Challenge America, Creative Writing Fellowships, and Literature Fellowships for Translation Projects–are available on the Arts Endowment’s website. Grant applications previously submitted to the Art Works category will now be submitted to the Grants for Arts Projects category. The National Endowment for the Arts supports projects in any part of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The FY 2021 Grants for Arts Projects and Challenge America programs support projects taking place beginning in 2021. Click the links in each section below for guidelines and application materials.

Grants for Arts Projects-Application Deadlines: February 13 & July 9, 2020

These grants support artistically excellent projects that celebrate our creativity and cultural heritage, invite mutual respect for differing beliefs and values, and enrich humanity. Cost share/matching grants generally range from $10,000 to $100,000. A minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount is required.

A Grants for Arts Projects Guidelines Online Presentation for potential applicants will be available in January 2020.

Challenge America-Application Deadline: April 9, 2020

These grants support projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations-those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. Grants are for a fixed amount of $10,000 and require a minimum $10,000 cost share/match.

A Challenge America Guidelines Online Presentation for potential applicants will be available in January 2020. In addition, there will be a separate presentation available for previous Challenge America applicants interested in applying for Grants for Arts Projects. NOTE: An organization may not apply to both the Grants for Arts Projects AND the Challenge America categories.

Creative Writing Fellowships: Poetry-Application Deadline: March 11, 2020

These $25,000 grants to published creative writers enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. Fellowships alternate each year between poetry and prose and FY 2021 fellowships are to support poetry.

Literature Fellowships for Translation Projects-Application Deadline: January 15, 2020

Translation Projects enable recipients to translate works from other languages into English. Non-matching grants are for $12,500 or $25,000.

NEH Summer Stipends Program – Summer 2019

Receipt Deadline September 26, 2018 for Projects Beginning May 2019

Brief Summary

Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.

Eligible projects usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials and publications, archaeological site reports, translations, or editions. Projects must incorporate analysis and not result solely in the collection of data.

Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months.

Summer Stipends support projects at any stage of development. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research.

Summer Stipends are awarded to individual scholars. Organizations are not eligible to apply.

Program Statistics

In the last five competitions the Summer Stipends program received an average of 834 applications per year. The program made an average of 77 awards per year, for a funding ratio of 9 percent.

The number of applications to an NEH grant program can vary widely from year to year, as can the funding ratio. Information about the average number of applications and awards in recent competitions is meant only to provide historical context for the current competition. NEH strongly encourages prospective applicants to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and application instructions located on the NEH website.  All applicants must submit their applications through grants.gov by the deadline of September 26,2018.

This program requires all tenured or tenure-track applicants to be nominated by an official of their campus; The University of Akron’s nominating official is Kathryn Watkins (kwatkin@uakron.edu or 330-972-6764).  Each institution may nominate up to 2 faculty members for the NEH Summer Stipends program.

Celeste Prize

Deadline: June 30, 2016

The Celeste Prize has been established to promote international contemporary art in the widest possible sense. There will be a final exhibition of 50 works and 3 projects, a catalogue of circa 80 pages which will contain illustrations of finalists’ works and critical texts, as well as 6 prizes totalling 23,000 € in cash. Awards night and exhibition of finalist works at The Bargehouse, OXO Tower, London, 7-9 October 2016.

Arts Writers Grants Program from Creative Capital

The Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program supports writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The Arts Writers Grant Program aims to support the broad spectrum of writing on contemporary visual art, from general-audience criticism to academic scholarship.

Ohio Arts Council, Building Cultural Diversity Initiative

Deadline: June 1, 2016

The Building Cultural Diversity program supports new and emerging organizations whose mission, programs, staff, and board represent culturally diverse communities. Awards support arts programming and projects that celebrate communities’ unique arts and culture or preserve a culturally significant artistic tradition or practice. These awards help ensure a vibrant range of arts and cultural experiences are shared with residents, visitors, and communities, both today and in the future.

Applicants may request between $1,000 and $3,000. All awards require a 50 percent match, up to half of which may come from allowable in-kind donations. Applicants planning to use in-kind donations to supplement a match should consult OAC staff prior to submitting an application.

Henkel (Gerda) Foundation, Research Projects

The Gerda Henkel Foundation provides funding and support for historical humanities research projects in connection with the Foundation’s research grant programme. Support is primarily provided for the historical humanities, in particular to support research projects in the fields of: archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history.
