The program’s primary aim is to build bridges between the two cultures of science and the humanities and to develop a common language so that they can better understand and speak to one another–and ultimately to grasp that they belong to a single common culture. The Foundation has established a nationwide initiative that works through programs in books, theater, film, television, radio, and new media to commission, develop, produce, and distribute new work and new initiatives that focus on science and technology for the lay public.

NEA Our Town

The Our Town grant program supports creative placemaking projects that help to transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places with the arts at their core. Creative placemaking is when artists, arts organizations, and community development practitioners deliberately integrate arts and culture into community revitalization work – placing arts at the table with land-use, transportation, economic development, education, housing, infrastructure, and public safety strategies. This funding supports local efforts to enhance quality of life and opportunity for existing residents, increase creative activity, and create a distinct sense of place.

HOW International Design Awards

HOW International Design Awards recognizes excellence on a global scale. This international design competition is the only competition that prominently recognizes winners in the award-winning magazine – HOW Magazine. The Best of Show Winner and Outstanding Achievement winners are featured in an issue with an in-depth article that showcases the award-winning designs and designers alike. Research in ESD should advance the state of knowledge of design methodology, for instance, by adapting existing methods to a new context or by carefully characterizing existing or new design methods in a new context. Research focused on the theoretical foundation of design and systems engineering in a generic, domain-independent fashion should be submitted to the Systems Science program (SYS).

The Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) program supports fundamental and innovative research necessary for designing, constructing, managing, maintaining, operating and protecting efficient, resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems. Research that recognizes the role that these systems play in societal functioning and accounts for how human behavior and social organizations contribute to and affect the performance of these systems is encouraged.

The Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) program supports fundamental research addressing the interrelationship of materials processing, structure, properties and/or life-cycle performance for targeted applications. The FY15 Prosthetics Outcomes Research Award is intended to support research that evaluates the comparative effectiveness of prosthetic clinical interventions, and/or their associated rehabilitation interventions, using patient-centric outcomes for Service members and Veterans who have undergone limb impairment or limb amputation. The objective is to improve the understanding of prosthetic devices, treatments, rehabilitation strategies, and secondary health effects.
