Streamlining Technical Services Workflows with MarcEdit

Presenter: Terry Reese (The Ohio State University)

Terry Reese, of the Ohio State University, will lead a workshop on how to use MarcEdit to streamline typical technical services workflows, especially as they pertain to cataloging, file loading, and electronic resources. This workshop’s target audience are both those new to MarcEdit, and those who are familiar with MarcEdit but need a refresher. Terry Reese created MarcEdit nearly seventeen years ago and has supported and developed this free software package used by librarian around the world.

Registration is full for the workshop to be held this Friday, August 12th, in Learning Studio 154 from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Monaco Elected to NOTSL Board

On June 10, 2016, Mike Monaco was part of a panel presenting to NOTSL (Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians) in the program “Now What? RDA and Best Practices for Cataloging Special Formats”.  Mike was also elected to Vice Chair of the NOTSL Board.  According to their website, the Vice Chairperson serves three consecutive one-year terms, one as Vice-Chairperson/Chairperson Elect, one as Chairperson, and one as Immediate Past Chair and Chair of the Scholarship Committee.

Way to keep professionally busy, Mike!

Amy Freels Presents Poster Session

Amy Freels, who is working on her certificate in Museums and Archives, gave a poster presentation at the Society of Ohio Archivists in May 2016.  She presented on the unique collaboration between the University of Akron Press and the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology (CCHP). The main focus was about publishing primary sources in book form. The poster presented a timeline of the publication process, from the selection of the primary source manuscript(s) to marketing and sales of the finished book.

Vic Fleischer Presents

Vic Fleischer recently gave the following presentation:

“Researching, Documenting, and Archiving Historic Landscape and Garden Projects.” Fields & Forests, Farms & Gardens: A Midwest Garden Symposium (Bath, OH, June 9, 2016). Presented on resources available for researching and documenting historic landscapes and gardens and how to preserve and archive historic and contemporary resources gathered as part of these historic restoration projects.

In March, David Procházka presented “Tracing Tárrega’s Preludes for Guitar” at the 2016 meeting of the Music OCLC Users Group in Cincinnati (http://musicoclcusers.org/recent-meetings/2016-presentations/?).

During fall 2015, David Procházka wrote an introduction for a new edition of Vincent d’Indy’s orchestral piece Diptyque méditerranéen.  (München : Musikproduktion Höflich, 2015).

Shelley Blundell will receive a Kent State University Faculty Recognition Award on October 23, 2015.  This award is student-nominated, and allows students the opportunity to provide their perspective on an individual faculty member through this nomination, providing support for a faculty member who truly made a difference in their life at Kent State University.

Shelley Blundell was selected to present the poster “A descriptive phenomenological investigation of the academic information search process of remedial undergraduate students” as a part of the Jean Tague-Sutcliffe Doctoral Student Poster Competition at the Association for Library and Information Science Education conference in Boston, Massachusetts, in January, 2016.
