Scheduled Services Outage
OH-TECH needs to complete some urgent maintenance on the systems that govern access to our servers. This maintenance will take place on Wednesday Dec 28 from 8pm-10pm. While OH-TECH works on these modules, users will not be able to access OhioLINK services.

We are not anticipating any issues after the maintenance, as the services themselves are not being taken down. OH-TECH is just interrupting the access routes. Once access is restored, OhioLINK will double check everything, but services should be up and functioning as they were before the maintenance.
* While the Central Catalog is unavailable, messages between local catalogs and Central will be queued and processed when Central is available again. This will include all PCIRC renewals and pickup anywhere transactions.
Once the maintenance is completed, OhioLINK will check the record queues from the local catalogs to Central and make sure that they are connected and that any queued messages are being processed.
We recognize that OhioLINK users are working all the time, and OH-TECH has scheduled this work over Winter Break to hopefully impact the lowest number of users.

The library system and library catalog hardware experienced a series of failures on Thursday and proved unrecoverable on site. Disks have been sent off site to our vendor for reconstruction.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please be assured our vendor is doing their best to get us up and running as soon as they can.

Ohio Library Council’s 2017 Convention & Expo will be in Dayton, October 4-6, 2017.
The program committee will meet in mid-December so we may have a more specific “wish list” of program topics from the OLC then, but here is the theme in case it piques your interest or aligns with work you’d like share:
LIBRARIES IN BALANCE. It is a thrilling time to be in libraries. We have the opportunity to be on the cutting edge of our communities, yet how do we maintain balance in the frenzy to remain relevant and innovative? What is the balance between quiet space and collaborative space? Money spent on physical or digital materials? Space for shelving or computers? The 2017 Convention and Expo will focus on maintaining this balance between the traditional and the innovative and responding to the needs of the community.
Programs do not need to fit the theme to be accepted. Mike Monaco would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the convention or the OLC in general, how to propose a program, or suggestions on how to develop your topic for the convention audience. Convention-goers tend to be public library administrators, managers, and librarians, with a sprinkling of MLIS students, academic librarians, and non-MLIS staff. Speakers are often academic librarians sharing some of their expertise, research, or insights, though many are public librarians, activists, or professionals from other fields too..

Susan Ashby and Paul Thompson presented at the OH-IUG (Ohio Innovative Users Group) conference in Dublin, Ohio on October 7, 2016.
Susan explained the various resources, services, and tools available to help update and redesign the library’s online catalog. She was quite pleased that all audience members were wide awake and fully engaged, even though it was the first session scheduled after lunch.
Paul demonstrated his workflow in redesigning the look and functionality of the UAL catalog, identified challenges he had in the process and how he overcame them, and generally ran over the time allotted. This was seemingly forgiven as he handed out $100 bills to each of the attendees. Sorry you missed it. Register today for the next OH-IUG.
Amy Freels, University of Akron Press, and Jamie Newhall, Instructional Services, are part of a group who are among 33 finalists for the Knight Arts Challenge who are eligible for a share of $1 million. Other members of the group are: Kathleen Endres (UA School of Communication), Chris Keppler (WZIP), Judy James (Special Collections Division, Akron-Summit County Public Library), Heather Pollock (Senior Lecturer, Honors/ Anthropology & Classical Studies), Fred Endres (Kent State), and David Baker (UA Institute of Human Science and Culture). The supporting institutions were: ASCP Library, WZIP, and the Institute.
According to the Knight Foundation website, the purpose of the challenge is to fund “the best ideas that engage and enrich Akron through the arts.”
The group proposed “to capture and celebrate Akron stories through a mobile kiosk that travels to neighborhoods, records people’s histories and stories, and edits them for the public and a radio show.”

SpringShare is experiencing problems with all public-facing instances of LibGuides. They are aware of the problem and working on a fix. As soon as service is restored I’ll let you know.
All other SpringShare services, such as LibCal and LibAnswers appear to be unaffected by this interruption.
