July NSF Grant Opportunities

Geoinformatics

Deadline: July 3, 2017

The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) will consider proposals for the development of cyberinfrastructure for the geosciences (Geoinformatics).  EAR seeks the development and implementation of enabling information technology with impacts that extend beyond an individual investigator or small group of investigators and that facilitates the next generation of geosciences research.

Enriched Doctoral Training in the Mathematical Sciences

Deadline: July 12, 2017

The long-range goal of the Enriched Doctoral Training in the Mathematical Sciences (EDT) program is to strengthen the nation’s scientific competitiveness by increasing the number of well-prepared U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents who pursue careers in the mathematical sciences and in other professions in which expertise in the mathematical sciences plays an increasingly important role.

Science of Learning

Deadline: July 12, 2017

The Science of Learning program supports potentially transformative basic research to advance the science of learning. The goals of the SL Program are to develop basic theoretical insights and fundamental knowledge about learning principles, processes and constraints.

Developmental Sciences

Deadline:  July 17, 2017

DS supports basic research that increases our understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, and biological processes related to human development across the lifespan. Research supported by this program will add to our knowledge of the underlying developmental processes that support social, cognitive, and behavioral functioning, thereby illuminating ways for individuals to live productive lives as members of society.

Linguistics

Deadline: July 17, 2017

The Linguistics Program supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general. Research areas include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and phonology.

Social Psychology

Deadline: July 17, 2017

The Social Psychology Program at NSF supports basic research on human social behavior, including cultural differences and development over the life span.

Among the many research topics supported are: attitude formation and change, social cognition, personality processes, interpersonal relations and group processes, the self, emotion, social comparison and social influence, and the psychophysiological and neurophysiological bases of social behavior.

Biological Anthropology

Deadline:  July 19, 2017

The Biological Anthropology Program supports basic research in areas related to human evolution and contemporary human biological variation. Research areas supported by the program include, but are not limited to, human genetic variation, human and nonhuman primate ecology and adaptability, human osteology and bone biology, human and nonhuman primate paleontology, functional anatomy, and primate socioecology.

Ohio Federal Research Network Opportunities

As part of the Ohio Federal Research Network’s (OFRN – www.ohiofrn.org) mission, we are engaging Ohio-based businesses throughout the State in order to identify sponsored research opportunities.

We have two types of opportunities: Sponsored Research and RFI.  Sponsored Research is an opportunity with a budget and due date.  RFIs are expressed interest in understanding specific capabilities within the network, without a current budget, but possibly a timeframe.

While these are un-funded opportunities, that doesn’t imply a lack of interest from the client.  We have vetted both the client and these opportunities and the technical need documented is a real one. Identification of Ohio researchers specializing in this area would be important introductions for the client and a critical step in generating a future funded opportunity.

For the specific details on the two available opportunities and contact information for OFRN, please email rschsrvsga8@uakron.edu

Letters of intent to OFRN are due on 5/5/17

New Guidelines for Submitting Proposals to NSF through FastLane

As of April 24, 2017, NSF will require the use of a spreadsheet template for identifying Collaborators and Other Affiliations information for Principal Investigators (PIs), co-PIs, and other senior project personnel identified on FastLane proposals. This is the template that CISE  has been using for Collaborators information. Be sure to load it as an xls or xlsx and let FastLane do the conversion on it (do not pdf it beforehand). A separate form will be uploaded for each individual on the proposal.

The template and associated instructions may be accessed directly at https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/coa.jsp

All are strongly encouraged to complete the form well before a proposal deadline is looming, as it will take some time. The good news is that once you have completed this template, you can reuse it for subsequent proposals, only updating as needed.

Research Presentation Featuring Dr. Hongbo Cong

Dr. Hongbo Cong, Presenting Material Compatibility and Challenges in Novel Biofuel Systems

Monday, May 1, 2017 from 9-10 am in Whitby Hall, Room 211

Dr. Cong, Assistant Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, will present the research that he conducted over the summer of 2016 with the support of the Faculty Research Grant. His research focuses on the corrosive behaviors of materials used in conjunction with various algae bio-fuels in order to further the research of algae bio-fuels as alternative energy sources.
