Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) provide sustained support of interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering. MRSECs address research of a scope and complexity requiring the scale, synergy, and interdisciplinarity provided by a campus-based research center. They support materials research infrastructure in the United States, promote active collaboration between universities and other sectors, including industry and international institutions, and contribute to the development of a national network of university-based centers in materials research, education, and facilities. A MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership.

Management and Operation of the National Geophysical Observatory for Geoscience (NGEO)

NSF hereby solicits proposals to manage and operate one or more components of the National Geophysical Observatory for Geoscience (NGEO). NGEO would comprise a distributed, multi-user, national facility for the development, deployment, management, and operational support of modern geodetic, seismic, and related geophysical instrumentation and services to serve national goals in basic research and education in the Earth sciences.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) seeks unclassified proposals for broad-based research and development aimed at using lasers and other light source technology to develop applications in medicine, photobiology, surgery, and closely related materials sciences, with applications to combat casualty care and other military medical problems. This announcement is primarily directedtoward university-based medical institutions; however, all qualified and responsible prime applicants located in the United States are eligible to submit proposals.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as practicable. Proposals may be reviewed and selected as received. Awards may take the form of grants or contracts. If you are interested, please email anthony.hinojosa@wright.edu letting him know you have decided to put in a proposal for it.

The overarching goal of NSF INCLUDES is to create a sustainable collaborative process for the inclusion in STEM of women, members of racial and ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in STEM, persons with low socio-economic status and people with disabilities. NSF INCLUDES will improve the preparation, increase the participation, and ensure the contributions of individuals from groups that traditionally have been underrepresented in the STEM enterprise.

PROCESSING NATURAL BIOMASS TO HIERARCHICAL POROUS CARBON VIA A CHEMICAL FREE APPROACH

Speaker: Dr. Jiahua Zhu

Date/Time/Location: Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 12-1 pm in Whitby Hall, room 211

Carbon with mesoporous structure attracted great interests since it has been demonstrated efficient adsorbent for pollutants removal from water and excellent catalyst support for chemical reactions. This work presents a new approach to fabricate mesoporous carbon. The elucidation of mesopore formation directly from raw biomass will pave the road to understand, design and fabricate functional porous carbons for adsorption and generate impact in other related fields such as catalysis and energy storage. The “green” feature of this technology is expected to revolutionize conventional mesoporous carbon manufacturing technology with significantly reduced cost and environmental impact.

Dr. Jiahua Zhu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Akron. Dr. Zhu received his Ph.D. degree of Chemical Engineering from Lamar University in 2013. Dr. Zhu’s current research interest covers the fundamental study of multifunctional polymer- and carbon-based nanocomposites and explores their applications in emerging fields such as heat transport, energy storage, environmental remediation, etc.
