Oversight Changes for NSF Funded Animal Research

The following announcement was issued by NIH staff in late August regarding changes in oversight of NSF funded animal research:

In August, NIH and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced an agreement to harmonize oversight of the welfare of animals used in NSF-supported research activities, and to reduce regulatory burden to grantee institutions. As of October 1, 2015, institutions receiving NSF funding will need to:

  1. include NSF-supported activities with live vertebrate animals as covered activities in their PHS Animal Welfare Assurance (Assurance), and
  2. promptly report situations involving NSF-supported animal activities to OLAW as required by PHS Policy.

Broad Agency Announcement for Extramural Biomedical Research and Development

Deadline: November 19, 2015

The USSOCOM seeks novel biomedical solutions to preserve the high level of performance and save the lives of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in field environments. Any projects proposed must be unique to the requirements of SOF who typically conduct combat operations in austere, remote locations without timely access to medical evacuation or elevated levels of medical care. It is these far-forward and/or isolated operations that make SOF medicine unique and result in material solutions characterized by ruggedness, light weight, small volume, and low power requirements.

Grinnell College Young Innovator for Social Justice Prize

Deadline: November 9, 2015

Up to two $100,000 prizes will be presented to individuals less than 15 years out of their bachelor program who demonstrate leadership in their fields and who show creativity, commitment, and extraordinary accomplishment in effecting positive social change. Half of the monetary prize will be given to the recipient (or shared between two recipients, in case of a shared prize) and half will be contributed to an organization designated by the winner.

The goal of the Environmental Engineering program is to encourage transformative research which applies scientific and engineering principles to avoid or minimize solid, liquid, and gaseous discharges, resulting from human activities on land, inland and coastal waters, and air, while promoting resource and energy conservation and recovery. The program also fosters cutting-edge scientific research for identifying, evaluating, and monitoring the waste assimilative capacity of the natural environment and for removing or reducing contaminants from polluted air, water, and soils. Any proposal investigating sensors, materials or devices that does not integrate these products with an environmental engineering activity or area of research may be returned without review.

Combustion and Fire Systems

The goal of the Combustion and Fire Systems program is to generate cleaner global and local environments, enhance public safety, improve energy and homeland security, manufacture new materials, and enable more energy-efficient manufacturing. The program endeavors to create basic engineering knowledge and solutions that are needed to develop useful combustion applications (such as flame-assisted synthesis of novel materials) and for mitigating the effects of fire.
