RFP Description
NineSigma, representing GSK Consumer Healthcare, invites proposals for new technologies to ENHANCE or REIMAGINE current approaches to tobacco cessation and reduction.
Background
GSK Consumer Healthcare currently is the largest global marketer of nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) for smoking cessation. We serve patients in over 20 countries, including the US, Canada, across Europe, and Australia.
GSK Consumer Healthcare strives to transform the future of self-care. We hope to leverage the wisdom of experts within the fields of nicotine and tobacco research to identify areas of critical and emerging unmet needs within the tobacco cessation and reduction space and collaborate with key scientific partners to help deliver upon them.
Key Success Criteria
The challenge focuses around the following areas of interest for GSK. Those with technologies that can fit or be adapted to any of these areas are asked to submit a brief proposal through the NineSights web portal (details below).
Differentiated Nicotine Replacement Therapy
GSK seeks differentiated oral and transdermal dosage forms for our NRT products as part of our Smokers’ Health franchise. Innovation may deliver superior efficacy or enhanced user experience.
Additionally, we are always seeking to improve how patients utilize our products by innovating in areas such as (but not limited to):
- Cessation and reduction of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)
- Novel dosage forms
- Improving compliance and adherence
- Research related to the efficacy or effectiveness of NRT
- Increasing access and availability to NRT
Digital Health & Behavioral Support Platforms
Behavioral support is shown to improve a smoker’s chances of quitting. GSK is interested in connected devices and technology platforms which help consumers quit or reduce smoking as well as manage their respiratory health. Areas of interest broadly include (but are not limited to):
- Improving the delivery and efficacy of behavioral support programs through greater personalization and customization via artificial intelligence, passive data collection, etc.
- Digital interventions that increase compliance with NRT.
- Digital interventions that improve the health and wellness of individuals trying to quit or reduce nicotine consumption.

RFP Title
Polymers That Decompose at Low Temperatures
RFP Description
NineSigma, representing a global high-performance materials manufacturer, invites proposals from organizations and researchers for polymers (fibres) that can decompose at low temperatures.
Background
Ninesigma’s client is a global supplier of high performance materials for a variety of high temperature applications.
The integration of polymer materials (fibres, etc.) into various product lines has a number of potential applications. The primary goal for the current search is to find a polymer matrix, blend or composition that decomposes at 100°C. Potential solutions which currently decompose at 250°C with a clear path to reducing (e.g. functionalising, processing, etc.) this decomposition temperature are also of high interest.
The decomposition temperature is linked to the fibre length and therefore consultants and/or academics who have extensive experience in this area are highly valued.
The client is open to all solutions from academia and from industry, as long as there is a clear understanding of the method and requirements.
Key Success Criteria
The ideal solution will be a polymer material / fibre which meets the following criteria:
- Decomposition temperature: 100°C
- Low melting point
- Fibre length: 3-6mm
- Fibre Diameter: micron range
- Final product polymer concentration <1%
Possible Approaches
Potential solutions could include, but are not limited to:
- Any polymer composition which has low decomposition temperature and low melting point
- Long length polymeric fibres
- Any green material systems

Timeline
Phase 1 – up to six (6) months from selection of submitted proposals during which the concept is validated/demonstrated and strategies for commercial development are developed
Phase 2 – 18-24 month period during which the technology is demonstrated in pilot line
Financials
Funding up to US$ 75,000 for development of a suitable solution.
Alternatively, the RFP sponsor will consider any reasonable business relationship with qualified partner(s) selected on the ability to address the issues described in this project.
RFP Title
Materials for Weather Protection of Buildings
RFP Description
NineSigma, representing a major building materials manufacturer, invites proposals for methods, materials, or novel approaches to re-inventing weather protection for residential buildings. The weather barrier may be directly exposed or behind a decorative façade, and should be able to withstand thermal, moisture, and UV environments for at least 10 years. Solutions that do not need a decorative façade, that provide lower installed/labor cost versus current solutions, or are cradle-to-cradle approaches are strongly preferred. Solutions that impact vapor barrier, roofing, or sheathing applications are also strongly preferred. The partner is open to a wide range of potential solutions (e.g., replacement with alternative substances, new material architectures, novel processing methods) that can achieve this objective.
Background
Residential homes in North America currently use 13.5 billion square feet of asphalt shingles, over 25 billion square feet of vapor barrier products, and billions of board feet of sheathing. The solutions for these markets are under intense pressure for a variety of reasons, including labor shortages, disposal/sustainability, and evolving building codes for fortified or storm-resistant building design.
The RFP sponsor is seeking novel approaches to weatherproofing for residential construction in North America. Potential solutions from adjacent industries are of significant interest to this client, including approaches that include new or novel materials, innovations in manufacturing processes, and engineering solutions.
Key Success Criteria
The technology must:
- Perform as well as, or better than, weatherproofing approaches currently used in commercial and residential buildings
- Maintain weatherproofing performance characteristics for a minimum of 10 years
- Be able to demonstrate protection from UV exposure, thermal conditions, moisture and vapor permeability without loss of mechanical integrity
- Demonstrate a clear path to high volume production
- Be able to reduce installed cost benefit for currently used approaches in conventional wood frame construction by at least 20%, ideally greater than 50%
Possible Approaches
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
- Materials substitution, functional materials, engineered products, or material structures
- Weatherproofing agents or additives that impart weatherproofing properties in construction materials
- Modifications to current manufacturing processes
- Additive manufacturing (3-D Printing)
- Micro-scale structural reorganization
- Coatings, surface treatments, sealing agents, or other post-processing solutions
Approaches not of Interest
The following approaches are not of interest:
- Approaches that do not have a demonstrable path to high volume production, or that do not save labor
- Modifications of current weatherproofing approaches (e.g. asphalt, Tyvek, etc.) that do not significantly improve performance and/or meet the desired price point noted in this RFP
- Materials or solutions that cannot meet safety or toxicity standards for residential home construction in the U.S.
- Concepts, ideas, or any early-stage technology that has not yet been demonstrated at lab or pilot scale
