Ian McCullough Round Up

Ian McCullough, Physical Sciences Librarian and Interim Head

 We have some catching up to do on Ian McCullough’s professional activities.

He had an article published:

Ian was also invited to speak at a colloquium on scholarly communication at Robert Morris University:

“Journal Impact Factor and Current Issues in Scientific Scholarly Communication, Publishing, and Librarianship.” and “Help me be a better librarian to my science, math, and engineering faculty” colloquiums presented at Robert Morris University, Moon County, Pennsylvania, November 15, 2016.

Finally, just this week, Ian won a travel grant this week ($2500 and free registration):

ACS Publications Travel Grant for Librarians and Library School Students, San Francisco, April 2-6 2017

Gersch Wins Visionary Award

Dr. Beate Gersch, Coordinator of Instruction Services and Bibliography and Undergraduate Outreach Librarian is this year’s winner of the Distance Learning Visionary Award as announced by the Distance Learning Interest Group of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO).

Noted for presenting internationally at ACRL, LOEX, DLS, ECIL and IFLA on topics such as archival research, collaboration, the Framework, library outreach with students and administrators, and assessment of academic libraries’ web pages. She currently has book chapters in press and has published journal articles and conference papers on these same topics. She recognizes the importance of intercultural communication as it relates to information literacy instruction as well as collaboration within the university and assessing impact.

Beate will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming DLIG Workshop on Friday June 9, 2017 at the Voice of America Learning Center of Miami University, West Chester, Ohio.

Susan Ashby and Paul Thompson presented at the OH-IUG (Ohio Innovative Users Group) conference in Dublin, Ohio on October 7, 2016.

Susan explained the various resources, services, and tools available to help update and redesign the library’s online catalog.  She was quite pleased that all audience members were wide awake and fully engaged, even though it was the first session scheduled after lunch.

Paul demonstrated his workflow in redesigning the look and functionality of the UAL catalog, identified challenges he had in the process and how he overcame them, and generally ran over the time allotted. This was seemingly forgiven as he handed out $100 bills to each of the attendees. Sorry you missed it. Register today for the next OH-IUG.

Freels & Newhall among Finalists

Amy Freels, University of Akron Press, and Jamie Newhall, Instructional Services, are part of a group who are among 33 finalists for the Knight Arts Challenge who are eligible for a share of $1 million.  Other members of the group are:  Kathleen Endres (UA School of Communication), Chris Keppler (WZIP), Judy James (Special Collections Division, Akron-Summit County Public Library), Heather Pollock (Senior Lecturer, Honors/ Anthropology & Classical Studies), Fred Endres (Kent State), and David Baker (UA Institute of Human Science and Culture).  The supporting institutions were: ASCP Library, WZIP, and the Institute.

According to the Knight Foundation website, the purpose of the challenge is to fund “the best ideas that engage and enrich Akron through the arts.”

The group proposed “to capture and celebrate Akron stories through a mobile kiosk that travels to neighborhoods, records people’s histories and stories, and edits them for the public and a radio show.”
