EJC scheduled maintenance, 31 May

OhioLINK will be using their regular maintenance window next Wednesday, May 31, from 5am to 7am, to complete scheduled maintenance on the Electronic Journal Center.

There will be associated downtime with this maintenance. OhioLINK expects the outage to last 30-60 minutes during this period.

Kaufman selected for OTNSI

Steve Kaufman from the University Libraries’ Design and Development Services has been selected to participate in the Open Textbook Network Summer Institute and Summit as one of our regional OhioLINK representatives. He will be part of a state-wide leadership team promoting the use of open texts and open educational resources. Seven regional reps will be attending the institute, and when they return will provide excellent coverage for train-the-trainer workshops and related activities in support of this initiative.

Jamie Newhall, Instructional Services, and Jon Endres, who works part-time in Psychology Archives, received the 2017 Society of Ohio Archivists Merit Award at the SOA Annual Meeting on Friday, May 19 for their work on the wire recorder project.  According to the website, the Award is given to individuals or organizations that have by excellence in deeds, actions, or initiatives improved the state of archives in Ohio over the past year. They were also presenters at TEDxAkron 2017 on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at the recently refurbished Goodyear Theater.  According to the TEDxAkron website, TEDx expands TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, beyond its annual conference by seeding smaller, independent events throughout the nation, called TEDx. Fleischer Serves as Peer Reviewer

Victor Fleischer, University Archivist and Head, Archival Services

Vic Fleischer recently served as a peer reviewer for the book Journey to Moonwalking by space suit engineer, author, and historian Ken Thomas.  The book, which is forthcoming this fall, will include information on the space suits developed for the Mercury astronauts by the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, and will feature images from the Goodrich records in Archival Services.

Results of the recent Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) election find two of our very own representing The University of Akron University Libraries.  Congratulations to Don Appleby, Access Services, who was elected Treasurer and Beate Gersch, Research & Learning Services, who was elected as Board Member-at-Large.

In addition, Beate was just appointed as Secretary of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) /Instruction Section Management and Leadership Committee.  She is excited to be serving the library profession at both the state and national level next year!

Stress-Less Week at the UL (May 1-5)

The dogs are back and so much more next week at the library. Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 5, students will be able to enjoy some stress-reducing, free and fun activities.

  • WagTime Therapy Dogs will visit in Bierce Monday- Friday at lunch (11am-1pm). *NEW hours* More therapy dogs will be visiting from 5-6pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  SIGN UP HERE TO VOLUNTEER
  • *NEW* Coffee with the Cops Wednesday morning 10am-noon- free coffee and cookies.
  • Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be first come first served in Bierce Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning.
  • Late-night coffee will be offered nightly in Bierce and Science Libraries from 8-11 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
  • Other popular activities like PB&J deli, button and magnet making, coloring tables and more will be available throughout the week.

Bierce Library will also have extended hours during pre-finals and finals week- staying open until 1am Sunday through Thursday each week.

Mike Monaco published a short review of the website Allmusic.com in Technical Services Quarterly, vol. 34, 2017, issue 2, on March 20th.

On March 24th, he presented the program “Fifty shades of genre: understanding and taking advantage of form/genre headings” at the Ohio Library Council’s Central Chapter conference in Worthington, Ohio.

On March 30th he is scheduled to present three programs: “Fifty shades of genre,” “Respect your authorities! Authority records demystified,” and “Getting to know your catalog,” at the OLC’s Northeast Chapter conference at Kent State University.
