Hello everyone, The maker community in Wayne County is making an impact in the effort to fight COVID-19 and its spread.  Wooster Community Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, West Hill Nursing Home, Aultman Orrville Hospital, UA Campus Cupboard, and others recipients are receiving community-made supplies that are out-of-stock elsewhere.  Schantz MakerSpace, Wayne College 3D Lab, and members who frequent these makerspaces are connecting PPE items to needed institutions and people on a continual basis through the pandemic. What amazes me about this effort is how many minds are working together to improve the PPE items we’re producing.  Face shields are important for medical staff, protecting themRead More →

Hello everyone, As the pandemic Coronavirus takes hold over the globe, we see countries implementing travel restrictions, social distancing measures, and work from home policies.  Even the more developed countries are seeing their healthcare systems overloaded and fatigued by COVID-19. The 3D printing community has many members keen to assist during the COVID-19 pandemic.  For example, see how this Italian hospital saves Covid-19 patients lives by 3D printing out-of-stock valves for reanimation devices. Hello everyone, Things have been hopping at Wayne College since the start of classes almost three weeks ago.  There are lots of new faces as students roam the halls, others from Fall semester resume their classes and continue friendships once again.  The 3D Lab was crazy busy the week before Christmas; each day was packed with community members and students making personalized gifts.  The start of semester is no different; students already made the lab their “hangout place” each day, while engineering students are already 3D printing parts for school projects. We had the pleasure of working with community member Tad, an accomplished sculptor.  OneRead More →

Hello everyone, It’s a busy Saturday morning.  16 teams are scrimmaging in the Boyer Gym during our annual Wheelchair Rugby fundraiser, an exciting event to watch and participate in!  In the 3D Lab, several students are doing design work for an electronic guitar that uses a microcontroller to detect the string movement, synthesizing sound from the vibrations.  A community member is engraving glass bottles and another is 3D printing a replacement furniture part for a local school.  There is rarely a dull moment in the 3D Lab! One of our student’s mother enjoys growing succulents.  These are plants with parts that are thickened, fleshy andRead More →

Hello everyone, The spring semester is well underway at Wayne College.  Now into our fifth week of classes, engineering students are buried in writing papers, taking exams, and building robots.  Already students built ball slinging robots and others that automatically navigate to predetermined check points on the floor.  But just as interesting, other students of other disciplines are building interesting projects of their own.  One student is learning how to create succulent vase with textured surfaces and converting an air pump to an aquarium water pump.   There is always something unexpected happening in the 3D Lab! Community member brought a new project for us, wantingRead More →

Hello everyone, The rain has (mostly) subsided since the start of summer last week.  The sunny heat almost hits like a wall when leaving the building.  For a cool place to work on your projects (pun intended), come visit the 3D Lab!  We’ve had a steady stream of visitors each day since the end of semester, so we’re happy to help make your ideas possible, too. We are particularly pleased with a recent visit by members of the Apple Creek Historical Society.  Their intention is to create a makerspace for the community to use, along with providing a variety of programs on projects that canRead More →
