McGurr’s Professional Activities

Melanie McGurr, UL Electronic Services

Melanie McGurr has accepted a two-year appointment to serve on the American Library Association’s Publication Committee starting in July of 2018. The committee oversees publications coming out of ALA in all formats. More information can be found here:

She will also be teaching a two credit Honor’s colloquium in Fall semester. The course, A Cultural History of the British Country House, will concentrate on all aspects of the history of the Country House (architecture and art, politics, economics, and social class) from Tudor times to the present.

McCullough’s Additional Responsibilities

Ian McCullough, Assistant Dean, Research and Instruction Services

In January, Ian McCullough was named an Assistant Editor for refereed articles by the journal Issues in Science and Technology Libraries, where he had been a peer-reviewer for several years.

In addition, he was granted the joint title of Assistant Professor, Chemistry starting January 1st, 2018.

Group Participation

On February 13, 2018, Susan Ashby, Frank Bove, Sean Kennedy, Mike Monaco, and David Prochazka presented “OhioLINK Material Type Implementation @ The University of Akron,” at the 2018 OhioLINK Summit in Columbus. They discussed why and how they implemented the material types, shared their lessons learned, and discussed how the material types are utilized in the OPAC, with tips for other libraries considering doing the same.

Procházka Writes Score Introduction

 

David Procházka | Music/Special Materials Cataloger

In December 2017, David Procházka completed an introduction for a new edition of Paul Dukas’ overture Polyeucte, to be published by Musikproduktion Höflich in Munich.  Dukas is best known for composing The Sorcerers’ ApprenticePolyeucte is an early work, based on Corneille’s play of the same title.

While the complete edition (score + intro) will only be available in print; the introduction itself will eventually appear on the publisher’s site.

On Saturday, October 28th, Susan DiRenzo Ashby and Lori Fielding participated in the New-to-Libraries Network Resume Review Workshop held at the NEO-RLS Headquarters in Hudson.  The workshop included a four-person panel session, a Q & A session, and a review of attendee’s resumes and/or CVs.  Susan and Lori presented on the differences between a resume and CV, best practices for both, and tips and best practices for submitting online job applications.

Local Presentation for Fleischer

On Friday, October 6, 2017, University Archivist and Head of Archival Services Vic Fleischer presented a double session at the Ohio Local History Alliance/Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Conference titled “Documenting our Doughboys: Commemorating the World War I Centennial in Summit County” with colleagues from Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the Summit County Historical Society, and the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
