Updates and New Stuff for Fall

Based on feedback gathered during space study surveys in the Spring, we’ve updated and upgraded several services and programs for students this fall.

Highlights include:

  • MakerStudio Move Relocated to the ground floor of Bierce, the expanded MakerStudio is a great place to explore and work collaboratively
  • Media Collection Featured on First Floor Browse the DVDs, CDs and newspapers in their new location in the first floor Learning Commons in Bierce
  • Refreshed Study Rooms Each study room in Bierce got a new coat of paint and freshly cleaned carpets
  • New Equipment for Lending More calculators, cameras, tripods, and fresh laptops for checkout
  • New Furniture One person tables and new chairs for quiet individual study on the 3rd floor of Bierce and bean bags on the ground floor. Plus four mobile whiteboards on the 2nd and 3rd floor.
  • New Lockers at the Science and Technology Library. Program your own code and use one of the nine lockers throughout the day.
  • New Learning Management System Brightspace, formerly Springboard, is our upgraded web-based course management system.
  • New Series of Events Gather @ the Library is a series of events curated by the University Libraries. Weekly events range from workshops and author talks to discussions.

Ian McCullough Published

Ian McCullough, Physical Sciences Librarian and Interim Head, S & T Library

Ian McCullough wrote a chapter with Jo Ann Calzonetti, “Are They Different? An Investigation of Space and Learning in a STEM Branch Library” which has been published in Assessing Library Space for Learning, edited by Susan Montgomery and published by Roman & Littlefield (2017).

In addition, Ian also wrote a non-refereed article reflecting on his trip to the ACS convention for ACS Axial: “Reflecting on My Experience as an ACS Librarian Travel Grant Winner”

Stitz Presentation in May

Tammy Stitz, Science & Technology Library

Tammy Stitz and Shelley Blundell will be presenting the mini-conference, Accessibility in the archives: Are your online materials compliant? at the Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting on May 19, 2017. The presentation will introduce a comprehensive, multi-sourced rubric that assesses Web accessibility compliance of online information resources.  They will also apply this resource to examples of online archives.

Ian McCullough Round Up

Ian McCullough, Physical Sciences Librarian and Interim Head

 We have some catching up to do on Ian McCullough’s professional activities.

He had an article published:

He was a presenter at the American Association of University Professors conference this Summer:

“‘You’re Faculty?’: Academic Librarians and Their Support of Faculty Unions.” AAUP Conference on the State of Higher Education, Washington, D.C. June 16, 2016

Ian was also invited to speak at a colloquium on scholarly communication at Robert Morris University:

“Journal Impact Factor and Current Issues in Scientific Scholarly Communication, Publishing, and Librarianship.” and “Help me be a better librarian to my science, math, and engineering faculty” colloquiums presented at Robert Morris University, Moon County, Pennsylvania, November 15, 2016.

Finally, just this week, Ian won a travel grant this week ($2500 and free registration):

ACS Publications Travel Grant for Librarians and Library School Students, San Francisco, April 2-6 2017

Scheduled OhioLINK Services Outage on Dec 28

Scheduled Services Outage

OH-TECH needs to complete some urgent maintenance on the systems that govern access to our servers. This maintenance will take place on Wednesday Dec 28 from 8pm-10pm. While OH-TECH works on these modules, users will not be able to access OhioLINK services.

Affected Services:

• ohiolink.edu
• EJC
• EBC
• ETD Center
• Central Catalog*
• DRC
• Music Center
• Rave URL resolver

We are not anticipating any issues after the maintenance, as the services themselves are not being taken down. OH-TECH is just interrupting the access routes. Once access is restored, OhioLINK will double check everything, but services should be up and functioning as they were before the maintenance.

* While the Central Catalog is unavailable, messages between local catalogs and Central will be queued and processed when Central is available again. This will include all PCIRC renewals and pickup anywhere transactions.

Once the maintenance is completed, OhioLINK will check the record queues from the local catalogs to Central and make sure that they are connected and that any queued messages are being processed.

We recognize that OhioLINK users are working all the time, and OH-TECH has scheduled this work over Winter Break to hopefully impact the lowest number of users.

Faculty: How to Upload your CV to SelectedWorks

Every faculty member should have a “SelectedWorks” home page.

Find your SelectedWorks page by visiting the SelectedWorks Gallery at http://selectedworks.uakron.edu

Once you find your SelectedWorks page, select “Login” from the menu in the upper right. Your SelectedWorks page is associated with your UA email account. You must use your UA email address to log in and edit your page.

If you have never logged into your SelectedWorks page, use the “Forgot your password?” link to reset the password.

There may be content on your SelectedWorks page that you did not add. If so, it was taken from your department’s website by the student assistants who created your page. Regardless, you are now free to edit this page as much as you like.

To upload your CV, look in the “About” tab for the second item, “Curriculum Vitae.” If you hover your mouse on this section, boxes will appear to let you to upload, remove, or replace a file. Upload your CV here. You do not need to create a new CV for your SelectedWorks page; simply update and upload whatever CV you use for communicating your accomplishments to your department and others in your discipline. It is best if you save and upload your CV file as a PDF file, as PDF is the only file format that will display the same on all screens and platforms.

ProQuest Maintenance 8/20

ProQuest has a maintenance window coming up from Saturday 8/20/16 at 10pm through Sunday 8/21/16 at 6am. This will cause many ProQuest platforms and products to be temporarily offline, including the ProQuest platform, ProQuest Congressional, and RefWorks, among others. The complete list of affected products is at this ProQuest support site.
