Mike Monaco presented “The life-changing magic of RegEx” at the Library Collective’s 2020 conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Thursday, March 12. This was a hands-on workshop introducing the attendees to what regular expressions (RegEx) are and how to use them to match different patterns in text or data, using games. His co-presenter, Kathryn Lybarger of the University of Kentucky, was unable to attend this conference due to illness.

Graduate Student Government, represented by President Amanda Stefin has received permission to sponsor and install a display for Women’s History Month in both Bierce Library and the Science & Technology Library. The display, titled “Women on the Rise” will feature several posters/stories of current UA female identifying students. Amanda is collecting the stories and University Communications and Marketing will be formatting them for print. The display will run March 9-27 (set up may occur March 9-11).
The display at Bierce Library will be installed on a large mobile whiteboard and located in the first floor lobby.
The display at Science & Technology will be installed on the existing large mobile whiteboard near the front entrance and will be located across from the entrance and adjacent to the Circulation desk.
Ian McCullough won a professional development grant of (up to) $2,500 to attend the two-day Library Carpentry Workshops in Baltimore this March. This is sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern Atlantic Region and “focuses on building software and data skills within library and information-related communities.” Specifically, Ian will be learning about GitHub and getting a brief introduction to Python.

They gave a PowerPoint presentation titled “Sharing Initial Steps on a Digital Preservation Policy and Program at The University of Akron.” OhioDIG stands for Ohio Digitization Interest Group. Let’s hear it for Rita and La! As qualified recipients of the 2019/2020 Friends of the University Library Professional Development Scholarship, these future librarians are pursuing their studies in graduate library science programs. They have demonstrated potential for accomplishments in librarianship and each will receive a scholarship to assist with funding their education.
The scholarship recipients will also be recognized at a library ceremony in the Spring Semester 2020, where the recipients’ names will be added to a library plaque. We wish them success!
