Employment Law Seminar – Free Passes

Free Law Student Passes to “Fundamentals of Employment Law” Seminar
Sterling Education Services, Inc. is a non-profit continuing education company that conducts seminars across the nation. They are holding a “Fundamentals of Employment Law” seminar in Akron, OH on January 18, 2011 and are offering  five law students free scholarship-passes to this seminar.  Students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law, a seminar manual, and you also get an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys. This is a win-win situation.

*Important Note: The scholarship policy requires that recipients provide credit card information at the time of registration to secure their free pass. No charge will be made to the card unless the registrant fails to attend the program and does not notify us three business days in advance. If a scholarship registrant should fail to show up at the program or cancel as described above a $50.00 no-show fee will be charged to the card provided. This policy has been instituted to avoid students securing a free pass and not choosing to use it while other students who would have like to have attended were told the free slots had been filled. Students will be thoroughly informed of this policy upon registration for the program.

ABA Writing Competition

2011 Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest
The ABA Business Law Section is sponsoring its 25th Annual Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest to encourage and reward law student writings on a business law subject of general and current interest.

Awards
– First Place: $2,500 
– Second Place: $1,000 
– Third Place: $500 

All winners will be invited and subsidized to attend the Section Spring Meeting 2011 in Boston, MA to receive their award.

Submission Process

Papers will be judged on research and analysis, choice of topic, writing style, originality, and contribution to the literature available on the topic. Papers submitted are normally 20-30 pages long, but should not exceed 100 pages of double-spaced typed text, including footnotes. Students need not be members of the Business Law Section to participate.

American Bar Association Business Law Section – Clerkships for Diverse Students

Business Law Clerkship Opportunities for Diverse Law Students 

The Business Law Diversity Clerkship Program encourages students to pursue business court clerkship opportunities and to consider careers in the practice of business law. In considering a student’s diversity, the Section will give special consideration to individuals who have overcome social or economic disadvantages such as physical disability, financial constraints, or cultural impediments to becoming a law student.

The objectives of the Program include:

• To encourage more diverse law students to apply for clerkship positions

• To foster relationships between business court judges and diverse law students

• To provide students with a foundation in various aspects of business law

 Up to nine interns will be given a summer stipend of $6,000 and placed in business court clerkships in the Philadelphia Commerce Court or the Delaware Court of Chancery.

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is required for admission to the bars of all but four U.S. jurisdictions. Passing scores, which are established by each jurisdiction, currently vary between 75 and 86. Applicants are advised to contact the jurisdictions directly for the most current information regarding passing scores, rules, and policies. A regularly updated list of contact information for the jurisdictions appears on the Bar Admission Offices page.

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a 60-question, two-hour-and-five-minute, multiple-choice examination administered three times each year.  Information packets are available at the Law School Receptionist desk, or on-line at http://www.ncbex.org/multistate-tests/mpre/.
