The Akron Bar Association (“ABA”) Street Law Program is a collaborative effort involving the legal community, the University of Akron School of Law, and local high schools. Street Law is a class that is taught by high school teachers in area high schools, with assistance from law students and local attorneys. In addition, the ABA Street Law Committee promotes law-related education for Elementary and Middle School Students.
The Street Law Intern’s primary role is to coordinate the Street Law Program from the law school end by serving as the contact person between the Akron Bar Association Street Law Committee and the law school. Generally, the coordinator will help the Committee with the planning and preparation of each year’s program for the law student participants. The coordinator will participate in recruitment and placement of law students to assist in the high schools with the Street Law class. The coordinator will be responsible for disseminating information to the law student participants and to the Street Law teachers at the high schools. There are additional job duties and the Intern will report to the Chair of the Street Law Committee.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• In the summer, begin law student recruitment efforts for next school year.
• After responses have been received expressing interest, contact students and provide them with preliminary information.
• At the start of school year, recruit law student participants and confirm participants’ placements.
• Throughout the semester, serve as a contact for students and assist with any problems regarding placements.
• Throughout the year, attend the monthly Street Law Committee meetings at the Akron Bar Association; typically held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Noon.
• Prior to exam week, collect all Street Law textbooks from law students.
• Assist the Akron Bar Association Street Law committee with preparation for the Summer Training Institute (usually held the 1st week in August) and the Mini-training session (usually held the last week of January) held for the Street Law teachers, law students, and lawyers: i.e. reserve room and video equipment at law school, etc.; help plan the agenda so as to address needs of the law student participants and the Street Law teachers.
The Street Law Intern must be available to work approximately 10 hours per week. Work will take place at the Akron Bar Association Building on 57 S. Broadway and at various local schools. Pay range is in the area of $8-10/hour.
