AAJ 2015 Mike Eidson Scholarship

American Association for Justice (AAJ) announces the 2015 Mike Eidson Scholarship.
The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship, traditionally given in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.
The application deadline is May 1, 2015 and the Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year on July 12, 2015 in Montreal, Canada.

About the program:

What is the value of works in the public domain?  We study the biographical Wikipedia pages of a large data set of authors, composers, and lyricists to determine whether the public domain status of available images leads to a higher rate of inclusion of illustrated supplementary material and whether such inclusion increases visitorship to individual pages. We attempt to objectively place a value on the body of public domain photographs and illustrations which are used in this global resource. We find that the most historically remote subjects are more likely to have images on their web pages because their biographical life-spans pre-date the existence of in-copyright imagery.  We find that the large majority of photos and illustrations used on subject pages were obtained from the public domain, and we estimate their value in terms of costs saved to Wikipedia page builders and in terms of increased traffic corresponding to the inclusion of an image.  Then, extrapolating from the characteristics of a random sample of a further 300 Wikipedia pages, we estimate a total value of public domain photographs on Wikipedia of between $246 to $270 million dollars per year.

Center for Constitutional Law Fellowships – applications are due by 3/31

CENTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL LAW FELLOWSHIPS

The Akron Center for Constitutional Law (CCL) is accepting applications for student fellowships for the 2015-16 academic year. Fellows work with the Center on research and public education related to recent developments in constitutional law. Current projects include tracking new U.S. Supreme Court decisions, adapting the Center’s resources to social media, and researching the history of gender and the constitution. The fellowship begins in Summer 2015 and fellows receive a small stipend for the part-time work. During the academic year, fellows are involved fully in the work of the Center, which includes opportunities for research, conferences, externships, editing the online journal, organizing moot court and paper competitions, mentorship by Con Law professors, and community public speaking. Fellows also have the opportunity to write their GWR thesis under the direction of the Center director.

It is expected that there will be three to five fellowships available. If interested, please submit your application to the CCL Director, Professor Tracy Thomas by March 31, 2015 at thomast@uakron.edu. Your application should include a letter explaining your interest in the area of constitutional law and a current resume including overall GPA and grades in all Con Law related courses. For questions please contact Professor Thomas, and for more information on the Center, go to http://www.uakron.edu/law/constitutionallaw/index.dot.
