The Deborah J. Broyles Diverse Scholars Program provides an award in the amount of $20,000 and a summer associate position to two law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The award is to be used to defray necessary expenditures related to the recipient’s legal education and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary. Summer associate positions are available in the following Reed Smith offices: Century City, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Richmond, San Francisco, Tysons, Washington, D.C., and Wilmington. Our Diverse Scholars Program began in 2002. In 2016, we renamed the program to honor late partner Deborah Broyles, who was our firm’s Director of Global Diversity & Inclusion. She was known for her legal work and community activism. Deborah was a trailblazer in diversity efforts in the legal profession, and her contributions to promoting diversity in the profession and throughout the United States were significant and transformative.

Reed Smith/BNY Mellon 2L Diversity Fellowship Program

The Reed Smith/BNY Mellon Diversity Fellowship Program provides an award in the amount of $5,000 and a 2021 summer associate position to a diverse, second-year law student interested in pursuing a career in financial services litigation who has demonstrated strong academic scholarship, dedication to community service and/or leadership, and an understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The successful candidate will spend the first six weeks of the

summer associate program in Reed Smith’s New York office and will spend the remaining four weeks in the legal department at BNY Mellon’s New York office. The $5,000 will be awarded at the conclusion of the summer program and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary.


Reed Smith 2L Managed Care Diversity Fellowship Program

The Reed Smith 2L Diversity Fellowship Program provides an award in the amount of $5,000 and a summer associate position to a diverse, second-year law student interested in pursuing a career in managed care litigation. The second-year law student will have demonstrated academic scholarship, dedication to community service and/or leadership, and an understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The successful recipient will spend the 2021 Summer Associate Program in Reed Smith’s Chicago Office working with managed care attorneys and clients across the country. The $5,000 will be awarded at the conclusion of the summer program and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary.

IL Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Scholars Program

Reed Smith is proud to be a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). The LCLD is made up of more than 275 corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners working to build a more open and diverse legal profession. As a member of the LCLD, our Chicago, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Tysons, and Washington, D.C. offices are pleased to participate in the 1L LCLD Scholars Program, which is designed to strengthen the legal pipeline by expanding the number of opportunities for diverse first-year law students. We have partnered with our clients Abbott in Chicago, Highmark in Pittsburgh, and Genentech in San Francisco to allow students to spend a few weeks during the summer program working directly with them. The program offers students the opportunity to work side-by-side with our lawyers as part of our Summer Associate Program.

Reed Smith/Citizens Financial Group 1L Diversity Fellowship Program

The Reed Smith/Citizens Financial Group Diversity Fellowship Program provides an award in the amount of $5,000 and a 2021 summer associate position to a diverse, first-year law student who has demonstrated strong academic scholarship, dedication to community service and/or leadership, and an understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The successful candidate will spend the first six weeks of the summer associate program in Reed Smith’s New York office and will spend the remaining four weeks in the legal department at Citizens Bank’s New York office. The $5,000 will be awarded at the conclusion of the summer program and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary.

Reed Smith/McKesson 1L Diversity Fellowship Program

The Reed Smith / McKesson 1L Diversity Fellowship Program provides an award in the amount of $5,000 and a 2021 summer associate position to a diverse, first-year law student who has demonstrated strong academic scholarship, dedication to pro bono work, community service and/or leadership, and an understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The $5,000 will be awarded directly to the Fellow’s law school for application towards 2L fall semester tuition, and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary. The selected candidate will spend seven weeks of the summer program at the Reed Smith Dallas office and three weeks with McKesson’s Legal Department. During the summer, the Fellow will work on a variety of projects covering multiple areas of law, including litigation, transactional work, commercial contracts and compliance and regulatory counseling.

Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG)

The Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG) Fellows Program (formerly known as the PDLG Summer 1L Program) offers diverse first year law students a route to summer employment at outstanding law firms and legal departments. It also provides the PDLG Fellows with a series of seminars and programs designed to enhance their skills and increase their knowledge of the Philadelphia legal community.
