David D. Dowd Sr. Memorial Award

ATTENTION:  UPPER DIVISION LAW STUDENTS

The School of Law is accepting applications for the David D. Dowd Sr. Memorial Award named in tribute to a distinguished attorney who dedicated his entire life to public service.  The award was created in 2007 by his son, Senior District Court Judge David D. Dowd, Jr. on the occasion of the recognition of his 25 years of service in the federal judiciary.   

The purpose of the Dowd Award is to promote a commitment to public service for all lawyers.  Awards are directed to Akron Law students considering public careers while in school and interested in seeking professionals careers in public service following graduation. 

 To be eligible, you must have:

  1. Completed your second year by the Spring of 2010
  2. Show a commitment to public service to date
  3. Be capable of working the summer of 2010 for at least ten weeks in a public placement
  4. Be committed to working in a public setting upon graduation

Placements this summer, in order of preference will be:

1st Preference:           The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, The Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office; the law departments for Akron, Canton, Massillon; and the Public Defender’s Offices in Summit and Stark counties

 2nd Preference:           The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio or the Public Defender’s Office for the District

 3rd Preference:           Other prosecutors’ or law directors’ offices

  4th Preference:           Other not already listed public service agencies

Awards  Summer work 2010 will be minimum of $2000.00 to one student.  The student will be expected to work 20 hours per week for not less than10 weeks.

If you are interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to Professor Carro at carro1@uakron.edu or by hard copy by March 29, 2010. Students in the upper 30% of the class will be given preference. Students should list short and long term goals and explain why the student wishes to work in a particular office, as noted above, and in this field. A committee will then review the applications and perhaps meet with selected applicants. We will select a person before the Spring term is over.
