The Role of Intellectual Property in Life Sciences Innovation and a Global Health Crisis
Jon P. Santamauro, Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie
In recent days, there have been calls in many countries, including the U.S., to disregard patents on treatments, vaccines, and medical devices needed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Jon Santamauro, a Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie, a leading innovative pharmaceutical company, will discuss the role of IP inpharmaceutical innovation to develop treatments that give us a fighting chance to beat this pandemic and the next. He will also talk about efforts to make treatments widely available during the current crisis. Mr. Santamauro is kind enough to be appearing and speaking on his own behalf to enrich our students’ learning experience, and any views he expresses will be his own and do not represent the views of AbbVie. His schedule is subject to change due to the fast-moving nature of events.
Prior to joining AbbVie, Mr. Santamauro had a long career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including service as the Intellectual Property Attaché in the U.S. Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. During this time, he represented the United States at the WTO, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN organizations in matters relating to intellectual property.
