DIRECTLY REPORTS TO: Judge Jim James

DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Assist the Judge in various court functions; perform legal research and writing; responsible for the physical functioning of the courtroom. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Assist the Judge in various court functions; contact attorneys, obtain and deliver files, prepare and maintain recording equipment, copy and post juvenile court schedule, copy and distribute domestic relations schedule as assigned; perform legal research, write memoranda for the Judge, prepare drafts of findings of fact and conclusions of law. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain courtroom security and desirable courtroom appearance; opens and closes court sessions, calls witnesses, screens individuals desiring to meet with the Judge.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Computer, video conferencing, telephone, teleconferencing, copier, and other general office equipment; automobile.

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: General public, judges, lawyers, governmental officials, court administration, other courts, and community agency personnel.

This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; an ability to take direction from multiple sources, to allocate time to multiple duties, and to communicate with supervisors, court personnel, attorneys, and general public. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the court process and procedure, office procedures, Ohio Revised Code, trial law, Family and Juvenile law, the ability to handle sensitive inquiries and contacts with judges, magistrates, public officials and attorneys. Interpret a variety of instructions in written and oral form, prepare accurate and concise documentation, gather, collate and classify, communicate effectively in written and oral form, maintain accurate records and the ability to handle frequent interruptions.  Ability to: make decisions quickly and correctly in cooperation with the judge’s procedure, to do so in an efficient manner, to meet time sensitive demands, have a high degree of accuracy, prepare meaningful organized, concise, and accurate reports, have an eye for detail, able to prioritize, and be patient, and remain calm when interacting with agitated individuals. Skill in: well-developed oral and written communication, advanced and accurate typing skills, maintain accurate records and reports, excellent documentation skills, required to be familiar with various computer software packages, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel.

Akron Law PLUS Program seeking student Law Fellows!

AkronLawJobs No. 9952 Overview: The LSAC PLUS Program at Akron Law is a 4-week online summer program for current college freshmen and sophomores with diverse backgrounds who want to explore pursuing a legal education. The Law Fellows will support the Co-Directors of the PLUS Program at The University of Akron School of Law.

Duties: The duties are varied and require organization, online communication, and the ability to facilitate the successful administration of the PLUS Program. The ideal candidate will be upbeat, outgoing, and welcoming to our prelaw students. All duties can be completed remotely.

Qualifications: Current 1L or 2L. Must be available to work a flexible 10-15 hours per week the weeks of June 1st, 2021, through June 25th, 2021. Please note that the LSAC PLUS Program will be held Monday-Friday, with a lighter class requirement on Fridays. PLUS Fellows will also be required to be available for a weekly, one-hour “office hour.”

Salary: $2,000 stipend, paid upon completion.
