Last SBA General Body Meeting of the Semester

Mark your calendars for Monday, March 28, because we will be holding our very last SBA meeting of the semester at 12:15 p.m. in room 301 of the library. We will be discussing the much-anticipated Barristers Ball and Elections for next year’s SBA leadership team (executive board). This meeting is crucial because we will be discussing how to run for SBA positions for the 2016-2017 school year.
As always, bring your calendars! Snacks will also be provided.

New summer internship/externship opportunities!

Cleveland, OH – Law Clerk  – Cleveland Municipal Housing Court  Overview: law clerk would be responsible for legal research on various criminal and civil law issues; drafting opinions, judgment entries and decisions; assisting the Judge and 6 Magistrates in preparation for trial and acting as personal bailiff to Magistrates as needed;  conduct pretrial conferences, settlement conferences and mediations; assist public in obtaining information about pending cases and assist landlords and tenants with navigating the judicial system; other work as assigned by the Judge or Magistrates.

Qualifications: 2L or 3L preferred but will also consider 1L students with an interest in public interest work and/or property law.  Previous experience in a court system is preferred but not required.  Position requires strong legal research, writing and analytical skills, and the ability to organize and prioritize a large number of assignments.  Friendly disposition and good interpersonal skills are a must.

Cleveland, OH – Innovations Governance Intern/Extern for Summer 2016– Cleveland Clinic

Overview: Cleveland Clinic Innovations (CCI) is the commercialization arm of Cleveland Clinic. CCI turns the breakthrough inventions of Cleveland Clinic employees into patient-benefiting medical products. The creation of new business opportunities allows CCI to deliver Cleveland Clinics unique capabilities into the commercial market, while aiding in the economic growth of Northeast Ohio and beyond. Our fast-paced and innovative environment enables an intern to experience a wide range of business law issues, as well as those issues unique to working in a commercialization group and a large healthcare organization.

Qualifications: 1L, 2L, or 3L, background and/or interest in Intellectual Property.

Akron Bar Foundation Fellowship

The Career Planning Office is excited to announce that the Akron Bar Foundation has created a fellowship to fund first and second year law students with a stipend while the student(s) is performing a summer clerkship with a not-for-profit, public interest or government position. The ABF Fellowship is available to any University of Akron Law School student completing their first or second year (full-time program) or second and third year (part-time program) curriculum. Recipients must commit to working in the position for at least 25 hours per week for a period of not less than ten (10) weeks, starting the third week of May. Students must arrange for work in a not-for-profit, public interest or government position prior to submitting an application. To apply, students must submit an application to the Career Planning Office by 12 noon on Friday, March 18. The application that is submitted must include: (i) a completed and signed Fellowship Program application form (available in the CPPO); (ii) law and graduate school (if applicable) transcripts (official copy, if possible), honors and awards; (iii) a current resume; (iv) a personal statement; (v) a statement from the employer confirming employment and the anticipated dates of employment; and (vi) such other information as requested. The application also may include letters of recommendation. Up to five applicants for the ABF Fellowship will be chosen for a personal interview to be conducted by select members of the Akron Bar Foundation. The number of ABF fellowships awarded and the amount awarded will be determined by the Akron Bar Foundation, but the amount of an individual award shall not be less than $2,500.
