In collaboration with The Salvation Army for Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, we are hosting a two events in need of volunteers.

  • Food Packing Volunteer Event Wednesday, November 17th from 11 am – 1 pm, Student Union Room 312
    • Need help packing 100 bags with various shelf stable food items for distribution on November 18th
  • TSA Food Bag Distribution Event Thursday, November 18th from 11 am to 1 pm, Student Union Piano Lounge by Starbucks
    • Need help distributing food items and collecting information

Akron-Canton Barristers Judicial Externship – for Spring

Akron-Canton Barristers Judicial Externship Program – spring application now open!

The Akron-Canton Barristers, in partnership with the University of Akron School of Law, is excited to announce the Akron-Canton Barristers Judicial Externship Program (“Program”) will continue for the spring semester. The Program is a diversity initiative that provides qualified minority students attending the University of Akron School of Law the opportunity to work as legal externs (for course credit) with select judges and magistrate judges in the Northern District of Ohio (placements for fall include Akron, Cleveland, and Youngstown). To be eligible, you must have completed 29 credit hours, be in good academic standing, and be a minority law student. 

To apply, students must complete the application form (available upon request from Career Services) and return the application form, along with a resume, to Assistant Dean Alisa Benedict O’Brien: ab139@uakron.edu no later than Friday, November 19, 2021. Applications will be reviewed by the Akron-Canton Barristers Externship Program Committee and students will be notified about interviews and placements by early December. If selected, students will need to register for the Externship course for spring. Please contact Dean O’Brien with any questions.

Cleveland Legal Aid seeking volunteers this week!

Legal Aid, United Way, CHN and Channels 19/43 are hosting a legal information phone bank on October 7.  This phone bank is focused on eviction prevention.  We need your help!  Volunteers will help staff the virtual phone bank and provide eviction prevention information to callers.  This is a 100% virtual volunteer experience – volunteers need to simply assist from a quiet, private location anywhere in the United States.  A training and script will be provided.

Time commitment is 3.0 hours over two days:

  • Wednesday, October 6, 2021 – 12:00 pm: virtual training and housing law via Zoom (30-60 minutes)
  • Thursday, October 7, 2021 – 4:45 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.: virtual phone bank with TV 19/43 (2.0 hours)

You must participate in the full 3.0 hour experience – training on housing and the phone system is necessary ahead of the information phone bank.  If never participated as a volunteer in past phone banks, you must attend the live training on 10/6.  If you participated in similar phone banks in the past, you can watch a recording of the training ahead of the 10/7 event.
