of Cleveland provides free, high quality legal assistance to low income clients
in civil matters and serves the communities of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake,
Lorain and Geauga counties. Students will assist Legal Aid attorneys in
representing individual clients in a variety of legal issues that impact
shelter, health/safety, and economic security. Areas of practice include housing, consumer, public benefits,
education, family/domestic violence, employment/barriers to employment, and
tax.
Our
Spring Program starts in mid-January (applications accepted October/November)
and our Fall Program begins in late August/early-September (applications
accepted May/early-August).
Student Qualifications: Legal Aid externs
should be currently enrolled in law school. Special consideration is given to
students with a demonstrated commitment to serving disadvantaged people and
communities. If your resume does not reflect a commitment to public service due
to personal financial constraints, please provide an explanation in your cover
letter. Law students who speak Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.
Essential Functions:
•
Assist attorneys with initial client interviews and ongoing client contact.
•
Assist attorneys in all aspects of advocacy and litigation, including legal
research, drafting of pleadings, memorandum, motions, affidavits and other correspondence;
the preparation of charts, tables, documents and other evidentiary materials;
and accompany and assist at hearings and other court proceedings.
•
Conduct factual investigation, including obtaining, analyzing and summarizing
documents and other evidence.
•
Effectively communicate with clients, co-workers, community partners,
volunteers, judges and court staff.
•
Participate in community legal education and outreach events.
•
Provide appropriate intake support and make referrals.

The Legal
Extern is a core member of the Bounce team who will be responsible for
proactively ensuring that the organization’s lease management is current,
organized, and contains efficient processes. This is a great opportunity for a
law student who is interested in learning more about the startup ecosystem in
Akron and nonprofit/corporate governance and compliance. Additionally, students
interested in real estate law would gain lease management and drafting experience.
The key responsibilities for the Bounce Legal Extern are to ensure proper lease
creation and documentation, management of electronic and physical lease and
insurance files, and to document rental invoice fulfillment. Additional
responsibilities may include assistance with the implementation and
documentation of state grant requirements, such as entering time and data in
CRM databases, assisting with completing processes for new tenant arrival and
tenant departure, and other tasks related to nonprofit governance and
compliance. In addition, there will be opportunities to get involved with the

Clerk. The International Institute of Akron (IIA) is an immigration services and
refugee resettlement nonprofit organization located in Akron, Ohio and serving
all of Northeast Ohio. IIA seeks a fall spring semester law clerk to join its
legal team. The law clerk will work as a team member in providing immigration
legal services to clients in the Immigration Legal Department and work directly
with the Immigration Justice Campaign to provide representation to detained
individuals at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center. The clerk will provide
general support to staff attorneys in their representation of legal clients
before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border
Patrol, U.S. Department of State and the Executive Office of Immigration
Review. We are seeking passionate and driven individuals who can commit to at
least 12 hours a week from approximately January – May 2020. Responsibilities:
• Represent detained clients before the Executive Office of Immigration Review
• Assist attorneys with initial client intake • Prepare immigration
applications for clients • Interact directly with clients to obtain the correct
information and documentation for their applications • Perform legal research
and analysis • Draft legal memos • Assist clients and walk-ins at Front Desk
Reception Area • Complete other duties as assigned.
