CQE Clinic Volunteer Training – Friday, April 4, 5:00pm – 1Ls welcome!!

Our last free Certificate of Qualification for Employment (CQE) clinic of the semester is this Saturday, April 5!  We’re very excited to be providing opportunities for ex-offenders in Summit County to take a step toward gaining employment and independence!

We are looking for students to volunteer from 12:15p-4:45p on Saturday, April 5. The clinic will be held at The Job Center, 1040 E. Tallmadge Ave. The time you volunteer can be applied toward your graduation requirement as pro bono limited means hours.

There will be a volunteer training on Friday, April 4, 5-6:15p at the law school. The time you’re at training will count toward your pro bono limited means hours as well. 1Ls are welcome to attend this training and volunteer at the clinic!!  Volunteers will also be needed to work at the intake table. This does not require you to attend the Friday training.

If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions, please e-mail Lyndsey at LLL35@zips.uakron.edu. You can also learn more about the clinic at our website: http://www.uakron.edu/law/clinical/cqe-clinic.dot.

Akron Bar Minority Clerkship Program for summer 2014 – applications due Monday, March 31st by 5:00 PM!

Summer 2014 Minority Clerkship Program: A joint project of the Akron Bar Association Diversity Committee and The University of Akron School of Law

The Career Planning Office announces the 2014 Summer Minority Clerkship Program (the “Program”). All full-time first year (who have completed up to 29 credit hours) and part-time second-year (who have completed 23-44 credit hours) minority law students are eligible to apply to participate in the Program.

Initiated in 1990 by the Akron Bar Association, the Program has been very successful over the years. Now co-sponsored by the University of Akron School of Law, the Program is designed to provide real-world work experience for minority students in area law firms, corporations, government agencies, and courts. The ultimate goal is increased minority involvement in all aspects of the practice of law in the greater Akron community.

All full-time first year and part-time second year minority students in good academic standing are eligible to apply to participate in the Program. For your information, the Program timetable is below.

We encourage all eligible students to apply for participation in the Program. The Program will not only give you the opportunity to gain valuable legal experience, it will also afford you the ability to make informed decisions about your future by providing an insider’s view of what it is like to practice law.

Interested students can pick up an application in the Career Planning Office.

Akron Law Alumni Association seeks Student Director – Application Deadline: April 1, 2013!

Message from Lia Thompson, Director of Alumni and Annual Fund

The Akron Law Alumni Association (“LAA”) Board of Directors has a dedicated position on its Board for a student director.  This unique and valuable opportunity provides the student director a chance to become involved in alumni leadership and alumni activities with Akron Law.  The student director represents Akron Law students to the LAA Board and works with the Board to identify ways in which students and alumni may work and communicate together for the benefit of both groups.

The student director serves in an ex-officio capacity and is expected to attend all Board meetings which are held at the School of Law on a bi-monthly basis throughout the academic year (i.e., August, October, December, February, and April).  The Board meetings begin at 4 p.m. and generally last for one and a half hours.

Applications for the 2013-14 student director to the LAA Board of Directors will be accepted from 2013-14 upper division law students who are in good standing.  Applications should include: (1) a current resume of the student; (2) a brief statement as to why the student believes that he or she should be selected to serve on the LAA Board; and (3) a brief statement as to why he or she wants to serve on the LAA Board.

The LAA Board’s executive committee will review the application materials and select a maximum of three students who will be invited to make a two-minute presentation to the Board at its April 8, 2014 meeting.  Students interested in being considered for this position should direct their application materials no later than Thursday, April 1 to Lia Thompson via e-mail (LiaThompson@uakron.edu) or dropping them off at the front desk of the Dean’s Office.
