Attention Class of 2013: Important Reminders for your Pro Bono/Community Service Requirement

Attention Students Graduating in May 2013!

There are over 100 students in your class who have not yet registered for the mandatory Pro Bono Service Requirement course with Professor Joann Sahl (one credit), which must be completed this fall or spring prior to your graduation. If you have completed your pro bono/community service hours already, or your requirement will be met after your volunteer work this summer is reported, please consider registering for the Pro Bono Service Requirement course for the fall. If you are unsure of your current reported hours, please contact Alisa Benedict O’Brien at ab139@uakron.edu.

Also, please remember that all 30 hours must be completed by April 1st in order to graduate.

Community Service Limited Means Opportunity – August 27th from 6-8 PM

Cleveland Foodbank Volunteer Night: Chief Judge Solomon Oliver, together with four staff members and a guest,  just registered to work as volunteers at the Cleveland Foodbank Evening scheduled for Monday, August 27, 2012 from 6-8 p.m..  What a great opportunity to work side-by-side with our Chief Judge, his bailiff, two law clerks and administrative assistant in an informal (nonjudicial) setting, while at the same time, providing a wonderful community service.  Please remember to visit our website at www.fba-ndohio.org to register and/or for additional details on the event.  First timers should plan on arriving at 5:45.

Important! Changes to Reporting Requirement for Pro Bono/Community Service Hours

Attention Students: Going forward, you are no longer required to report your community service and pro bono hours online. You are only required to turn in your completed Certification of Supervisor form to Professor Joann Sahl or Alisa Benedict O’Brien, via email (jsahl1@uakron.edu or ab139@uakron.edu), or in person. If you have any questions about the requirements, please feel free to email Professor Sahl or Ms. Benedict O’Brien. Thank you.

Community Service Limited Means – Two Opportunities!

  1.  Be the Church service event, which is taking place in Akron and Massillon on Saturday, August 25th –  We are still in need of more volunteers, and it is a great opportunity to help out with Akron community organizations.  We are helping to run a community picnic for low income families, assisting with clean-up and small household improvement jobs in the Channelwood Housing Project, and hosting a café for newly arrived refugees.  If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know ASAP.  There is a fee to participate, but it includes a T-shirt and lunch.
  2. The second opportunity begins in October.  We run a one-on-one tutoring program for children in the Channelwood Housing Development on Tuesday evenings.  As the program is one-on-one, we do not accept a student until we have a tutor for them, so we always have a waiting list of children in need of tutoring.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please let me know, and I will connect you with David Lange, the Director of the program.

Please let me know if I can provide you with any further information or if you wish to volunteer!
